Dr. Joyce Copeland

My interest in science began was I was quite young, with an fascination for the natural world. Through high school and college that interest, the challenge of an ever-changing field, and a desire to give back to society led me to medicine. I find family medicine particularly rewarding and challenging, and enjoy providing care for families across the generations. I also have a strong commitment to training future physicians, and have been involved in various teaching positions throughout my career. I currently teach at Duke University School of Medicine one half-day a week, as well as support student learners at the clinic. I enjoy incorporating my fluency in Spanish into my practice as well. When not working, I enjoy spending time outdoors with my three children, horse and two puppies. I am medical director of Duke Family Medicine Center, and my interests include women’s health, quality improvement, and medical education. I am always on the lookout for new and better ways to serve and help our patients. I gain a lot of personal satisfaction from being involved with nearly every aspect of patient care. I am involved in the center’s CenteringPregnancy® prenatal care initiative. I have worked at Duke Family Medicine since I moved to the area in 2008, and I have served as medical director since 2011. I have always enjoyed teaching and believe it is a core value of our practice. When not at work, I am spending time with my spouse, who is also a physician, and my three children.
