"I am a vascular surgeon with the training and experience to treat the full scope of vascular disease, however I do have a passion for preventing amputations. I have spent my career building both technical and academic expertise in the field of limb preservation for patients with diabetes and vascular disease (peripheral artery disease/PAD). My academic focus is on addressing health disparities related to amputation and working in underserved communities to achieve health equity through sustainable, community focused programs. Clinically, I have come to Duke to build a comprehensive multidisciplinary Threatened Limb Clinic. At our clinic, we work together with podiatry and wound care to closely care for our patient population and give them the ""TLC"" they deserve.". As a surgeon that specializes in the vascular system, which is the body's network of blood vessels, I appreciate that there are many different ways to significantly help people. I truly believe making a connection with a person is one of the most important aspects in patient care. I don’t tell my patients what decision to make about their health. It's my job to understand the priorities in their life and then give them information and guidance to make their own decision. In doing so, a stroke can be prevented by repairing arteries to the brain. Fixing an aneurysm, which is caused by a weakness in the wall of an artery, can save someone from hemorrhaging to death, and treating the arteries to the legs can prevent an amputation or help reduce some causes of severe leg pain. Dr. Shortell is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Arterial Insufficiency. Her top areas of expertise are Varicose Veins, Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA), Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm, Carotid Artery Surgery, and Thrombectomy.

I am a cardiologist who has been at Duke for over 15 years. I grew up in North Carolina and am proud to call Durham home. My father was a physician and my mother was a nurse, so I always thought about going into medicine. Cardiology came most naturally to me during medical school. The best part of being a doctor is the feeling you get from having genuinely helped someone in a meaningful way. I enjoy practicing at Duke, because I get to work with a lot of smart people who are dedicated to helping patients. When patients have challenging issues, Duke is a great place to receive care because of the access we have to top-notch providers and resources. In my spare time, I enjoy reading history and spending time with my young child. Dr. Liao is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Arterial Insufficiency. I perform all types of vascular surgery from taking care of varicose veins to fixing aneurysms and everything in between. One of the things I love about my field is that I get to treat the whole patient. Once they come see me, they become my patient forever; it’s critical to develop a long-term relationship with them. My job is to not only treat whatever issues they came to see me about, but also to learn about what led to their problems. It’s important to have discussions on their risk factors so they can improve their day-to-day life and reduce the chance of needing additional procedures. When I meet with patients, I think it’s important to present them with all the options available and find out what matches their personal goals. Outside of work, I enjoy sailing, scuba diving and taking my two dogs hiking. Dr. Mureebe is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Arterial Insufficiency. I love being a vascular surgeon because it provides the opportunity to treat disease in all aspects of the body. I specialize in arterial disease, whether that means preventing an abdominal aortic aneurysm from rupturing or performing a bypass to end debilitating leg pain. Vascular surgery is a unique combination of traditional technical challenges and modern technology, which allows for minimally invasive procedures. Most important, vascular surgery allows me to create long-term relationships with my patients. I like to sit down and speak with patients and their families in order to create a family atmosphere where patients feel they can talk to me about anything. At the end of the day, we are all on the same team. Dr. Long is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Arterial Insufficiency. As a non-invasive cardiologist at Triangle Heart Associates, I focus on chronic disease diagnosis and management. I work with patients who have a broad range of primary cardiac problems. Some patients don’t yet have a cardiac diagnosis and are referred here where we make the diagnosis and provide lifelong treatment. A big part of my job is educating patients. I hope when they leave the office they understand why they’re taking certain medicines and getting specific treatments. I become very close with the patients I see over a long period of time. It’s rewarding to see the impact you have on those people. It’s hard to beat Duke in the quality of care in cardiology and the breadth of services available. I am a vascular surgeon with Duke Health. I treat all vascular problems, but I primarily focus on problems involving arteries, such aneurysms or blockages in arteries that supply the brain, intestines, or legs. Vascular disease can be chronic and life altering. In my opinion, patients with vascular disease are extremely resilient. It was the resilience of patients with vascular disease that drew me to this specialty. I found the resilience and perseverance of vascular patients inspiring. I enjoy getting to know patients and their families and being a part of their story. I am originally for Washington D.C. I enjoy sports, grilling and spending time with my wife and two children. I came to the area to start the nuclear cardiology program and also to do interventional work and general and preventive cardiology. My mom was a research physician, and my dad was a cardiologist. So the dinner conversations were pretty much medically related. I think my first interest in medicine came through that, going to the lab with my mom and on rounds with my dad. I said, wow, this is something I could do and would really like to do. I like to talk to people and listen to their story, see how they are doing, see if the things we have talked about are working for them, or whether there are other ways we can get them better. I like seeing them do better over time, seeing improvements in their cholesterol, blood pressure, exercise, things like that. I usually take care of two types of patients. One is patients with coronary artery disease who have blockages in the heart arteries. The other is peripheral artery disease with blockages in the leg arteries. I treat patients both in the clinic and in the hospital. In the hospital, I provide treatment opening these blockages with balloons and stents. Duke is unique because of its ability to provide innovative treatments to patients. A lot of places around the state and country can provide standard of care, and I think Duke does a really good job of offering that. But the thing that really sets Duke apart is the ability to go one step further and provide new treatments that may provide benefits that others can’t offer. I met a patient early in my training who really had no options for treatment. She had a blockage in a leg artery that we could not open with a balloon and stent. We injected her with cells under a research protocol, and she really experienced a tremendous benefit. We thought it would be short-lasting but we saw her back a couple of months ago and she’s still doing well. That really solidified my interest in doing research on these novel, innovative treatments to our patients. I am an interventional cardiologist and researcher who has been at Duke for nearly 20 years. I enjoy being at Duke because of the “family” I get to work with every day. When we are able to make a patient feel better through teamwork; it’s a great feeling. I chose cardiology as my specialty because of the chance to make a difference in someone’s life in real time. When someone is having a heart attack, they are relying on you to come to their aid quickly. At that moment, I get to apply science to save a life, while learning more about what we can do to help improve people’s lives in the future. In that way, medicine also gives me the chance to learn from my patients and apply what I find to benefit the greater good. I find that whole process is exciting. When I am not at work, I enjoy spending time with my school-aged children. Dr. Patel is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Arterial Insufficiency. My role in cardiology at Duke has been in the prevention and management of advanced cardiovascular disease symptoms in my patients. In the area of prevention, I specialized in cholesterol treatment and specifically in the management of statin medications especially for those individuals who feel they are intolerant. My practice also has a focus on patients with difficult-to-control hypertension, hypertension medication intolerance, difficult-to-manage congestive heart failure, and problems with heart failure medications. My newest role in the clinic is as the director of Outpatient Services for our practice. Our practice-based goals are to make sure everyone who sees a Duke cardiologist leaves on the best therapy for their disease based on current evidence and the individual's ability to tolerate and benefit from that treatment. What is the definition of Arterial Insufficiency?

Arterial insufficiency is any condition that slows or stops the flow of blood through your arteries. Arteries are blood vessels that carry blood from the heart to other places in your body.

When should I see an Arterial Insufficiency doctor near Durham, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing an Arterial Insufficiency doctor near Durham, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Arterial Insufficiency doctors near Durham, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Arterial Insufficiency doctors near Durham, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with an Arterial Insufficiency doctor near Durham, NC?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Arterial Insufficiency doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Arterial Insufficiency doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with an Arterial Insufficiency doctor near Durham, NC?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Arterial Insufficiency doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Arterial Insufficiency doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Arterial Insufficiency doctors near Durham, NC?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Arterial Insufficiency doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find an Arterial Insufficiency doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Arterial Insufficiency doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
