I see patients with mitochondrial and lysosomal storage diseases, developmental delay, intellectual disability, chromosomal disorders, congenital defects, short stature, failure to thrive, and adult genetic disorders. I love the application of rapidly growing genetic knowledge to treat patients with a variety of medical problems that involve a complex interaction of genetic and environmental factors, particularly since the Human Genome Project. I find it fascinating to use the massive power of sequencing technology and artificial intelligence/machine learning to predict phenotypes from genotypes with increasing clinical relevance to human health. In my spare time, I like to hike and play sports with my wife and teenage sons, play piano, and learn famous Russian poetry of the 19th century. I see patients in person and through telehealth. My interest in medicine first grew from my experiences with family members who were ill. My training is in both general internal medicine and psychiatry. I supervise residents at Duke Outpatient Clinic and see patients in the solid organ transplant program for psychiatry. I believe in the essential nature of integrated care and extend that to the multiple areas in which I practice. My career interests center around the interplay of medicine and psychiatry, particularly in complex care settings. I consider my psychiatric practice to be psychotherapy-informed medication management. Outside of medicine, I enjoy running, watching and playing a variety of sports, listening to music, and traveling. I was first drawn to psychiatry by a high school AP Psychology class. I found the material fascinating and knew I could spend a life learning about and providing mental health care. Since that time, I have stayed true to that path while developing loves for working with families and children impacted by autism and mental illness, preventative health care, mental health systems, and how health policy intersects with all these fields. I am truly honored to be at Duke where I have the opportunity to merge my passions. I approach each encounter and project with a focus on developing a relationship, discovering the individuality of each person and idea, and learning the unique ways that I can help and contribute. I am a general pediatrician with a special interest in developmental pediatrics especially in children with complex issues or autism spectrum disorders. I’ve been working at Duke since 1989. The most rewarding experience for me as a doctor is when I am able to help parents feel comfortable handling complex medical issues at home. It’s important to me to work with the parents as a partner who assists them in raising their children. As part of the Duke Health System, Duke Pediatrics has access to many resources and specialists. It’s critical to have a pediatrician you feel comfortable with to be your guide and partner in approaching the health system. Outside of work, I’m an avid reader and enjoy backpacking. Dr. Baker is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorder. He is also highly rated in 1 other condition, according to our data. In pediatric gastroenterology, we see children of all ages with disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. This can include disorders of the esophagus (food tube), stomach, pancreas, liver, gall bladder, small intestine, large intestine, and rectum. I have a particular interest in caring for children with disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI), such as irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia. DGBI in children may be associated with chronic abdominal pain and meal-related symptoms. I also have a particular interest in caring for children with motility disorders. These include disorders such as esophageal achalasia, gastroparesis, intestinal pseudo-obstruction, and severe constipation. Pediatric gastroenterologists at Duke collaborate with several specialty colleagues in areas such as pediatric surgery, physical therapy, psychology, otolaryngology, and pulmonology to provide cutting-edge clinical care. We also educate pediatric gastroenterology trainees and lead academic innovation through quality initiatives and research to improve pediatric digestive health. What is the definition of Autism Spectrum Disorder?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder. It often appears in the first 2 to 3 years of life. ASD affects the brain's ability to develop normal social and communication skills.

When should I see an Autism Spectrum Disorder doctor near Durham, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing an Autism Spectrum Disorder doctor near Durham, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Autism Spectrum Disorder doctors near Durham, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Autism Spectrum Disorder doctors near Durham, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with an Autism Spectrum Disorder doctor near Durham, NC?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Autism Spectrum Disorder doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Autism Spectrum Disorder doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with an Autism Spectrum Disorder doctor near Durham, NC?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Autism Spectrum Disorder doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Autism Spectrum Disorder doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Autism Spectrum Disorder doctors near Durham, NC?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Autism Spectrum Disorder doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find an Autism Spectrum Disorder doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Autism Spectrum Disorder doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
