"Philosophy of care | My philosophy of care is patient-centered. I believe in a strong doctor and patient relationship that involves mutual respect, honesty, compassion and personal responsibility. I believe an essential part of ""doctoring"" is providing quality medical care in a caring atmosphere where every patient is heard and treated as a unique individual. | Why I entered medicine | Ever since I could remember I had always wanted to go into medicine. I am one of seven children. My mother was a nurse and she always encouraged me to enter the medical profession. She entered nursing school when I was 8 years old. I was brought up watching her study, listening to stories about patients and the hospital. My enthusiasm for medicine continued in high school and college; I loved the sciences. When it was time to fill out my application, I knew being a doctor would enable me to make a positive and meaningful difference in the lives of people when they need it most, and there are not many professions that give us that privilege. | Community involvement | I remain active in the community supporting my church, childrens schools and sports teams. I am also active in the American Heart Association's Lehigh Valley chapter. | Personal interests | As a mother of three beautiful children, wife of a wonderful cardiologist and a solo medical practitioner in internal medicine, personal interests are hard to fit in. My father purchased a home on the Jersey Shore in 1994, which allows me to enjoy the beach and precious time with my family. I also love to ski. I started skiing in medical school and make a yearly trek out West with my family and friends. As a physician, I am always reminding patients of the benefits of regular exercise, and I, too, try to remain physically active. In 2011, I completed the Lehigh Valley Marathon -- that was a very proud moment!". Dr. Persin is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Autosomal Recessive Hypotrichosis. Philosophy of care | I try to approach each patient interaction with an open mind and open ears. I listen to what patients are saying – and what they’re not saying – to get the complete story. My goal is to partner with patients and empower them to get involved in their care. | Why I entered medicine | Early on in school, I noticed I most enjoyed classes about health and the human body. As my medical training progressed, I discovered there’s so much more to being a physician than prescribing and diagnosing. It involves a unique mix of skills, including detective work and the ability to listen to and support patients. Practicing medicine is a very fulfilling career, ever-changing and always keeping me on my toes. I’m grateful for the opportunity to connect deeply with patients and help them live healthier lives. | Community involvement | I enjoy staying involved with medical education, including working with medical students and internal medicine residents. I also stay active as a volunteer at my children's school when time allows. | Personal interests | I have two awesome children who continue to keep me busy. I love time with my family and am naturally in my happy place at home, reading a book or cooking with my husband. Philosophy of care | My goal is to prevent disease and treat existing conditions while improving your quality of life. I also believe in a whole-person approach to care because your quality of life is much more than a diagnosis – it includes your passions, family, friends, mental and physical health, as well as your future goals. I believe that by collaborating and working together, we can help you achieve your goals and improve your wellness. I am particularly interested in the dynamic interactions between family members and how to help families grow healthy and strong together. | Why I entered medicine | Very early in my life as a mother, I witnessed the powerful impact that physicians play in the experience of life and death for their patients. It inspired me to become a doctor so that I could positively impact lives around me. Also, I knew that whatever profession I pursued, I wanted to both provide an example of service to my young children, and feel that time spent away from them was contributing to something greater than myself. | Community involvement | I spend time volunteering and contributing to local family wellness. I do this through fund/resource raising for local charities, volunteering my time in parenting support classes, working with local diaper banks, and visiting elementary schools to teach children about wellness. | Personal interests | My husband and I are blessed to have three sons ranging from toddler to teenager. Philosophy of care | I want to help people live their best life. | Why I entered medicine | My family comes from a combination of cultures. I was raised near the Venezuelan-Columbian border, and the exposure to this environment, with limited medical services, inspired me to work in improving access to health care to the area's inhabitants. Due to the political environment in Venezuela, I later chose to move to a country that cherishes freedom. | Personal interests | I enjoy my family, reading history, languages, swimming, scuba diving and playing tennis. Philosophy of care | I like to gab with my patients. Good medicine takes time. Each individual is extraordinarily complex. You have a spirit, a personality, societal pressures - all these different factors play a role in a person's health. I try to account for all of it. I think there's an extraordinary untapped potential in the therapeutic value of the patient-physician relationship. I look to release the power of that relationship. In casual conversation, you can learn a lot about someone and share something about yourself. A better relationship means better care for the patient. I'm interested in preventive care – diet, sleep, alcohol, smoking and cancer prevention. For a person to change his or her personal way of life is one of the most difficult things. I ask my patients if they're ready, and then I go as far as I can with them and give them the resources they need. | Why I entered medicine | I was a professional musician – a guitarist. But I soon discovered I was not so musical! I was only able to go so far. Medicine is a DeHoff family tradition. There are medical diplomas in my family going back to the Civil War: my father, my grandfather and my great-great-grandfather - this goes way back! It's a very important role to play in people's lives. It's more mainstream and more stable than my music career. It also has more opportunities to help people. | Community involvement | I sometimes perform jazz guitar in the Lehigh Valley. | Personal interests | I like a simple life and enjoying the moments of every day. My wife sells old and rare books. We enjoy hunting for books together at book stores and yard sales. Over the years, I have been assembling a comprehensive collection of books on medical history. I also enjoy collecting vinyl records, mostly American jazz records, and playing jazz guitar. Philosophy of care | I pride myself on being compassionate, understanding and most of all sympathetic to the needs of my patients. Also, I have a sense of humor! I try to make my patients feel comfortable by simply listening to their needs. I believe in thorough communication and trying to explain what I am thinking to my patients. Understanding on both of our parts is extremely important to the doctor-patient relationship. | Why I entered medicine | I experienced multiple illnesses as a child, and I looked to my doctor for comfort and guidance. My pediatrician always gave my parents and me a feeling of peace - a sense that everything would be all right. | Personal interests | I enjoy spending time with my wife, two children and my dog. Philosophy of care | My main goal is to treat every patient as a person with kindness and respect. I’m passionate about preventative care and educating patients about lifestyle changes that help people live longer, healthier and happier lives. I like to take a holistic approach that includes diet, exercise and helping the body heal itself, as opposed to just using medications. I prescribe them when necessary, but a lot of chronic conditions can be improved or prevented with lifestyle changes alone. I think the extra time I spend counseling and educating patients about caring for their bodies is definitely worth it to their health and well-being. | Why I entered medicine | My grandfather was a physician with his own practice. He had a passion for medicine that I believe was passed on to me. He just loved caring for patients and getting to know them. He literally took care of whole families, delivering babies and caring for each family member throughout their entire lives – a true family practitioner. I saw from a young age how rewarding a career in medicine could be. Fortunately, I found that I really enjoyed studying the sciences. Biology was my favorite subject in high school, and I majored in it in college. I took a year off before applying to medical school to work for Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. I triaged all patient phone calls and handled OR scheduling. It wasn’t a clinical role, but working closely with patients showed me without a doubt that I wanted to follow in my grandfather’s footsteps. | Community involvement | I have two small children who take a lot of my time when I’m not working, so I give to the community when I can. In college I volunteered with an organization called Dress for Success that helps homeless women dress for job interviews. During my residency, I volunteered at high schools and colleges giving sports physicals. I was a competitive figure skater when I was younger, so I love working with young athletes, talking to them about preventing injuries and staying in peak condition. It’s truly a joy watching them achieve their highest athletic goals. | Personal interests | I love spending time with my two kids and my husband. We like being active outdoors, going for walks as a family and exploring the area. I still skate for fun, and also stay in shape by practicing yoga and spinning (riding a stationary bike). My kitchen is another happy place for me. I love baking and cooking Italian food. My grandparents were born in the United States but met in Rome where my grandfather went to medical school and my grandmother worked for the American embassy. I grew up hearing all about Italian culture and cuisine. In my quieter moments, there’s nothing like a good novel. I’ve always enjoyed losing myself in a book more than watching TV. It’s a wonderful escape and a great way to unwind. Dr. Stockhausen is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Autosomal Recessive Hypotrichosis.
