Dr. John T. Rich

L. Christopher Grandizio, DO, is an orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in hand, wrist, shoulder and elbow surgery. Dr. Grandizio is a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine and serves as the of the Chief of Shoulder & Elbow Division for the Geisinger Musculoskeletal Institute. Dr. Grandizio is an expert in the treatment of peripheral nerve compression (including carpal tunnel syndrome and cubital tunnel syndrome), upper-extremity trauma and fractures, sports injuries, and shoulder and elbow replacements. In addition, he specializes in complex reconstructive procedures in the upper-limb, including tendon transfers for shoulder, elbow and hand conditions.|After completing his Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at Geisinger, he went to on to complete a one-year fellowship in upper-extremity surgery at the Cleveland Clinic. Upon returning to Geisinger, he founded the Geisinger Upper-Extremity Research Fellowship, where he has mentored numerous international and US fellows. In 2021, he was selected to participate in the Young Leaders Program for the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH).|Dr. Grandizio maintains a strong interest in both research and education. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed research articles. As an expert in the management of complex elbow instability, Dr. Grandizio has been invited to give numerous national and international presentations on topics ranging from upper-extremity trauma to technology in healthcare. He serves as a peer-reviewer for multiple orthopaedic journals and is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Hand Surgery. As part of his commitment to education, he is heavily engaged in professional societies and is involved in multiple committees and leadership positions within the ASSH. In addition, Dr. Grandizio is one of the few upper-extremity surgeons who is a member of both the ASSH and ASES.|A former member of Bucknell University’s NCAA Division I baseball team, Dr. Grandizio has a long history in athletics and enjoys helping his patients return to doing what they love. Joel Klena, MD, is chief of the Division of Hand and Microvascular Surgery for the Geisinger Musculoskeletal Institute, as well as program director for the Geisinger Orthopaedic Surgery Residency. He assumed this role in 2017 after being the associate residency director for eight years.|Dr. Klena received a BS with honors from the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point, N.Y., graduating ninth in his class with dual degrees in marine engineering and marine transportation. His time at the USMMA included service in the Gulf War conflict and captaining the Academy’s NCAA Division I Rugby Team.|After fulfilling his naval and maritime commitments, he attended medical school at the State University of New York’s Upstate Medical College in Syracuse and completed orthopaedic surgery residency training at Geisinger Medical Center. He returned to Syracuse for a fellowship in hand and upper extremity surgery, including time at Texas Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital in Dallas.|Dr. Klena serves on the resident education committee for the American Society for the Surgery of Hand and is a member of the American Orthopaedic Society. He has extensive peer-reviewed publications within the hand literature. With my mother being a nurse, I was always exposed to medicine. I saw my parents helping people and was inspired to pursue medicine as a career. That, plus my love for sports, sciences, biomechanics and anatomy, led me toward orthopedics. It's very rewarding to help people get their function, motion and quality of life back. As a collegiate baseball player, I was drawn to the anatomy, biomechanics, and function of the upper extremity, and how to rehab and treat the common injuries. As the team hand surgeon for many local high schools, colleges and professional teams, I understand what it takes to get you ""back on the field."" | Community involvement | I have worked with local high school students interested in health care and led them through several upper extremity cadaver dissections. I am also the team hand surgeon for many local high schools, Lehigh University, Kutztown University and Muhlenberg College to name a few. I am the hand surgeon for the American Hockey League - Lehigh Valley Phantoms. In my spare time, I coach Little League baseball in the South Parkland Youth Association. | Personal interests | Professionally, I enjoy teaching our next generation of physicians: high school students, medical students and plastic surgery residents, in the office and the OR. | Personally, I enjoy traveling, the beach, all four seasons the Lehigh Valley has to offer, and spending time with my wife and four children.
