Vision is so intricately related to one's quality of life. Many patients who come to the Duke Eye Center are concerned that they could be going blind, but they rarely ask that question directly. It is important that my patients clearly understand their eye disease process, the risks, benefits and all treatment options so that we can make joint decisions. I try to reassure, when possible, and share the positives, such as 'their eye condition may only affect one eye' or that 'it is possible to improve their vision or prevent further visual loss'. We also discuss how other health problems or lifestyle decisions can affect their visual health. When someone has a vision threatening condition, it is my goal to ensure that they know that, as their physician, I will advise them and guide them through their treatment and the often complicated medical system. I am involved in clinical trials, including the study of innovative therapies related to macular diseases. I also specialize in treating patients with diabetic retinopathy and retinal vascular diseases. I am committed to providing the highest level of evidence-based patient care. I was awarded the Clinical Scientist Development Award from the National Eye Institute, and I received the Heed Foundation award. I am a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, Society of Heed Fellows, Society for Neuroscience and American Society for Neural Therapy and Repair. As a medical retina specialist, I am passionate about providing state-of-the-art care to patients with age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, and other macular diseases. I approach each patient as an individual and strive to provide care that addresses his or her unique needs and goals. For each of my patients, I carefully consider exam findings and results of advanced retinal imaging studies and use this information to design a personalized treatment strategy. In my role as a physician, I enjoy most the enduring relationships that I build with patients and their families, and the opportunities that I have to make a lasting positive impact on their lives. In addition to patient care, I maintain an active clinical and laboratory research program. I am actively involved in clinical trials of new treatments for age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, and in studies of new imaging technologies for improved diagnosis and monitoring of macular diseases.
