As a gastroenterologist, I specialize in digestive disorders that affect the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, rectum, liver, and pancreas. In addition to seeing patients, I perform upper endoscopy (EGD) and colonoscopy. I was drawn to Gastroenterology as a specialty because digestive disorders come in many different forms and affect patients of all backgrounds and ages. My practice focuses on patient-centered care and shared decision making, and I enjoy working with patients to develop a treatment plan tailored to their specific problems. I believe patients should feel empowered to participate in their medical care. Outside of the office, I enjoy exploring the outdoors with my wife and children and music, especially playing the guitar. I am thrilled to return to Duke Health after my recent retirement to provide much-needed part-time endoscopy services and improve access to colon cancer screening and surveillance. I first came to Duke from Kansas in 1989 and loved the pine trees and people so much that I never went back. I was the first female gastroenterologist (and 20 weeks pregnant) when I started private practice in Raleigh in 1994. After nearly 30 years of uninterrupted service to my beloved patients in central North Carolina, I retired in January 2024. It was difficult to give up my passion for gastroenterology, colonoscopy, and patient interaction. I am eager to return with a schedule that allows me to travel more with my husband. I enjoy meeting patients and easing their anxiety through rapport and detailed explanations. A little humor and hand-holding also help. I love safely removing large polyps.I have two grown children; my daughter is a physical rehabilitation PA in RDU, and my son is a game quality control specialist in Austin, Texas. My passions include crosswords, concerts, Broadway shows, sporting events, and traveling. Dr. Hutzenbuhler is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Chronic Erosive Gastritis. Her top areas of expertise are Familial Adenomatous Polyposis, Diverticular Disease, Gastrointestinal Bleeding, Gastrectomy, and Endoscopy.

I specialize in performing advanced luminal endoscopic procedures, such as peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) for the treatment of certain disorders of the esophagus and stomach, endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), mucosal resection (EMR), full thickness resection (EFTR), and endoscopic suturing for the removal of lesions from the GI tract, as well as transoral incisionless fundoplication (TIF) for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux (GERD). It is important to me that my patients understand that they are part of the team when it comes to taking care of their gastrointestinal conditions. I will help them make the best decisions, but will not push them to do anything with which they are uncomfortable. Therefore, it is also very important to me that my patients feel well-educated about their gastrointestinal condition so that they can help make the decisions that are best for them. I am originally from Apex, North Carolina, and after many years away, I am excited to be back in the Triangle taking care of the community that raised me. I’m a general gastroenterologist and treat a wide range of GI problems, but my area of specialty is in esophageal disorders. I see patients who may have swallowing disorders, hard-to-control acid reflux disease, or disorders or problems with the muscles of their esophagus. I also see patients with Barrett's esophagus, which is a gastroesophageal reflux disease where the lining of the esophagus may change over long periods of time. We need to treat it to prevent patients from getting esophageal cancer. It is important to establish a level of trust and have compassion for patients, making sure they feel that I’m completely invested in what’s important for them, doing everything to get to the right answers of what’s causing their symptoms, and coming up with a plan that works best to treat their problem. Dr. Wood is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Chronic Erosive Gastritis. \Internship is the first year after medical school. That year, I was a real doctor, but still was supervised by the attending staff. My first attending had an international reputation but believed ferociously that the art of medicine was grounded in what he called ""\""the story.""\"" Most critically, he taught me, you had to know the main character of that story -- your patient. Over years of practice, I've provided care for death row prisoners, Fortune 500 CEOs, and NFL players. Each story is unique, as should be my approach. Daily, I work on capturing the details, and I try to teach our trainees to do the same.""""https://www.dukehealth.org/sites/default/files/styles/doctor_profile/public/physician/john-t-geneczko-jr-md.JPG?itok=DexM3Iv7 Aetna | Ambetter | Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC | Cigna | Duke Group Plans | Experience Health | Gateway Health Alliance | Healthgram | Humana | MedCost | Medicare | NC Medicaid | TRICARE | United Healthcare active English no Davis Ambulatory Surgical Center 120 E Carver St Durham NC 27704 US 9194701000 9194701053 https://www.dukehealth.org/find-doctors-physicians/john-t-geneczko-jr-md https://corporate.dukehealth.org/sites/default/files/2025-06/Duke%20Health%20Approved%20Logos_1.png Duke Endoscopy Clinic - Clinic 2H 40 Duke Medicine Cir Durham NC 27710.0 US 9196849522.0 Duke Gastroenterology North Durham 4220 N Roxboro St Durham NC 27704.0 US 9193853880.0. I’m a native North Carolinian and second generation gastroenterologist. I’m a general gastroenterologist, so I treat diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, liver, and pancreas. This includes heart burn, constipation, diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatitis, cirrhosis, and numerous other conditions. I also perform routine endoscopic procedures, such as upper endoscopy and colonoscopy. I love gastroenterology as a specialty because it requires a team effort from nurses, techs, and patients to provide quality care. Being from North Carolina, I treat my patients as family and encourage a dialogue with my patients as medicine is a balance of science and art. Every individual is different. What is the definition of Chronic Erosive Gastritis?

Chronic erosive gastritis is a recurrent, or persistent inflammation of the mucosal lining of the stomach characterized by several ulcer-like lesions. Chronic erosive gastritis is often caused by the bacteria that causes stomach ulcers, Helicobacter pylori, overuse of pain medications, or drinking too much alcohol.

When should I see a Chronic Erosive Gastritis doctor near Durham, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

      • Your primary care provider recommends it.
      • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
      • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
      • You need specialized testing or procedures.
      • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Chronic Erosive Gastritis doctor near Durham, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Chronic Erosive Gastritis doctors near Durham, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Chronic Erosive Gastritis doctors near Durham, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Chronic Erosive Gastritis doctor near Durham, NC?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Chronic Erosive Gastritis doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Chronic Erosive Gastritis doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.
