Dr. Patrick J. Vaughan

Dr. Dayne Mickelson is an orthopaedic surgeon with expertise in sports medicine and complex arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder, knee, and hip. He has a special interest in knee preservation procedures including cartilage repair and transplantation, complex shoulder pathology, multi-ligament reconstruction, as well as novel biologic treatments. He also focuses on general orthopaedics including acute or chronic knee, shoulder, and hip problems, pediatric injuries, and fracture care. Dr. Mickelson’s philosophy is based on education and individualized care plans. His practice, therefore, focuses on accessibility, convenience, and a friendly atmosphere where a patient is treated like family. Dr. Mickelson believes in a shared decision-making model, where the treatment plan is customized based on an individual’s aspirations and goals. He finds great satisfaction in helping patients return to the activities they enjoy and providing a truly outstanding experience from beginning to end. Dr. Mickelson was born the eldest of three boys outside of Milwaukee, WI. When he was young, he and his family moved to Woodinville, WA, where his family still resides. Dr. Mickelson graduated magna cum laude from Lehigh University (Bethlehem, PA) with a degree in computer engineering. He went on to attend medical school at the University of Washington (Seattle, WA) and graduated Alpha Omega Alpha (highest honors). Dr. Mickelson subsequently completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Washington before completing subspecialty training in sports medicine and arthroscopy at Duke University (Durham, NC). Dr. Mickelson has authored over a dozen papers on orthopaedics, education, and technology as well as written textbook chapters on advanced techniques in sports medicine. He has published in Orthopedics, the Journal of Surgical Education, The Journal of Hand Surgery, and The American Journal of Sports Medicine. Dr. Mickelson has a passion for sports. He was a four-year letter winner on the Lehigh University men’s basketball team, winning the Patriot League championship and playing in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament (“March Madness”) his junior year. Dr. Mickelson previously served as team physician for Duke University’s football, basketball, and lacrosse teams, as well as for North Carolina Central University’s football team. He is currently the team doctor for Redmond High School and Bellevue College. Dayne and his family are excited to be back home in the Pacific Northwest. When not at work, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Kelly, and their two sons. He also enjoys basketball, skiing, cooking, reading and keeping up to date with the latest technology. John T. Heffernan, MD, is fellowship trained in all aspects of shoulder and elbow surgery and has extensive training in sports medicine surgery. His interests include arthroscopy of the shoulder and elbow, rotator cuff repair, shoulder instability, shoulder and elbow reconstruction, fracture care of the upper extremity, ligament reconstruction of the knee, and knee replacements. He is a Candidate Member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons and serves as a reviewer for their Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery.During his medical training, Dr. Heffernan volunteered his time providing medical care as a sideline team physician for high school football teams of New Orleans, worked as an assistant team physician for Columbia University Athletics and assisted with the medical care of the New York Yankees and New York City FC (MLS). As a former varsity collegiate athlete in swimming, Dr. Heffernan is passionate about getting athletes of all ages back to their best performance.Dr. Heffernan is passionate about his work as an orthopedic surgeon and getting his patients back to their highest quality of life and activity. He believes that providing outstanding orthopedic care starts first with listening carefully to his patients.Dr. Heffernan is a fifth-generation native of the Puget Sound region and is proud to return home and take care of the people of his community. He and his wife, who is also a physician, are avid downhill skiers and enjoy cycling, hiking, being on the water, and spending time with their family. Wendy Heusch, DO, is a Pacific Northwest native, originally from Oregon. She graduated from the University of Puget Sound where she played volleyball on the 1993 NAIA Championship team. Her orthopedic training has taken her from West Coast to East Coast and although she enjoyed each area of the country, she believes there is no place quite like the Northwest.Her practice interests include treating all sports related injuries, with special interests in the shoulder and knee. She completed an Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine Fellowship at Orthopedic Research of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia where she learned from some of the most respected arthroscopic surgeons in the country about the latest techniques in arthroscopic surgery and sports medicine. These include all arthroscopic surgery of the rotator cuff and other disorders of the shoulder including dislocations and instability, as well as ACL surgery of the knee. She is also experienced in treating work related injuries of the shoulder and knee. She understands the unique circumstances surrounding work related injuries and helps her patients navigate the L&I process.Dr. Heusch has pursued and obtained subspecialty board certification in Orthopedic Sports Medicine. This subspecialty certificate is for board certified orthopedic surgeons who have demonstrated qualifications in sports medicine beyond those expected of other orthopedic surgeons. This includes additional training, a practice characterized by a volume of cases in sports medicine, and by passing an exam administered nationally by the AOBOS.Being an athlete herself, she enjoys treating the needs and injuries of all types of athletes, from high school players to the recreational athlete. She has also spent a portion of her fellowship with the team physician for the Washington Redskins learning about the care of the professional athlete.
