I grew up in a small town in Argentina where everybody knows everybody. I trained at a hospital in Buenos Aires, was elected chief resident, and then received further training in neonatology and Emergency Medicine before moving to Wilmington with my wife, Dr. Petrini. I really enjoyed the time I spent training in medical school and I enjoyed the pediatric part the most. So I decided to take that path and have never regretted it. Kids have the fire inside, and bounce back quickly. I’m passionate about helping people in general, especially children. I advocate for immunizations, which are one of the wonders of medicine, along with educating kids about obesity, asthma and the importance of complying with medication regimens. These are very serious issues in many populations. My other big passion is creating a medical home for my patient families. The medical home concept combines teamwork and information technology to improve patient care, reduce health care costs, and improve patients’ experiences. The goal is to foster an ongoing partnership between patients and their health care providers. I did mission work with a group that spent a month helping people in the Andes mountain range in South America. It was a beautiful experience, sharing habits and culture, and it taught me to put myself in other people’s shoes and see things from their perspective. I am a first-generation daughter of a Holocaust survivor, and grew up in central New Jersey with two brothers — one has cerebral palsy. I’ve always been interested in science and education, and, with my mother as a role model, I am a strong advocate for inclusion, disability, and other issues. I relate well with kids in general and especially those who have disabilities. As a pediatric rehabilitation physician, I like to guide children’s recovery and rehab, help patients and their families set realistic expectations, and get them through the experience with all the information they’ll need. I’m a powerful advocate for the disabled, inspired by my mother’s steadfast commitment to help my brother succeed in his own life. I’m passionate about giving parents those same tools, educating children and families dealing with disabilities and injuries about the process of recovery. So they can be prepared. It’s important to give injured children and their families as much guidance and deep honesty as possible, so they can go through the experience knowing what to expect. This approach improves follow-through and success, and it’s also how I train residents. I’ve always enjoyed puzzles and the satisfaction once a puzzle is completed. That is one reason that attracted me to the field of pediatric neurology, specifically epilepsy. It’s heart-warming when the puzzle pieces fit together and I’m able to help my patients understand their neurological disorder so we can work as a team to find the best treatment plan. I love working with children because they are honest and resilient. When they smile and laugh, the world just lights up. I chose my field of pediatric neurology because of my fascination with the brain, in particular the plasticity of a young brain where timely treatment can have an impact on the child’s cognitive future. I’m passionate about helping my patients and their families attain the best quality of life, and to achieve this requires a trusting partnership and teamwork between my team, my patients and their families.  I have special interest in the treatment of intractable epilepsy, and am very familiar with the use of dietary therapies, neurostimulation and epilepsy surgery in the treatment of epilepsy. Few people know a child better than the child’s caretaker. So I always try to listen and work together as a team with my patients and their caretakers. I strive to stay up-to-date with the latest innovations and treatment options to provide my patients the best care possible so they can live life to its fullest. Being a pediatrician is so much fun, and being around children makes me happy. Every day I teach and counsel families, and every day they teach me something new. It is a true privilege to watch my patients grow and to have the opportunity to learn from them and build relationships with their families. I’m excited to teach residents and medical students about early childhood development and autism in the same way I was taught. I am lucky to have had great mentors in the field who taught me medicine in a very supportive environment. My mentors inspired in me curiosity, compassion and service and, by teaching the next generation of clinicians, I hope to pay it forward. As a pediatrician, I see myself as an advocate for children, always putting the patient’s needs first. I listen attentively to each child and family, identify what is needed, and then represent their voice. Much of my day-to-day work involves addressing any barriers the family may encounter in seeking and receiving coordinated care. Chief, Delaware Valley Primary CareAssociate Program Director, Pediatric Residency I try not to rush my patients and their families. Whether I’m telling jokes, doing magic tricks, or speaking in my Donald Duck voice, I always try to find a way to bond with my patients. Helping children lead healthy lives! Dr. Rodney Scott straddles the interface between basic and clinical science, enabling him to carry out and lead multidisciplinary research projects, with scientific findings that have major clinical implications. He has expertise in the design of clinically relevant experiments and in translating basic science findings within a clinical framework. He applies these findings in his clinical practice that, over the last 2 decades, has concentrated on the care of children with epilepsy, particularly those with status epilepticus and those with additional cognitive and behavioral impairments. Children with neurological disorders are often vulnerable. Providing high quality care allows these children to make maximal quality of life gains that minimizes these vulnerabilities, thereby enabling their roles in society. I am passionate about the management of severe epilepsies, and I emphasize the importance of quality of life, moving beyond the traditional approach of seizure reduction as the most important outcome for these children. I aim to integrate high quality clinical care with cutting edge research to ensure that I am providing the most up to date information to children with neurological diseases and their families. I find inspiration in the motivation and optimism of my patients. Most kids I treat have complex medical needs or physical disabilities. I see my role as helpingeach child function to the best of his or her ability, removing barriers, and opening up opportunities for socialization and personal fulfillment. I want my patients to be able to enjoy the same ordinary and extraordinary life experiences as other kids. I had planned to become a general pediatrician until I fell in love with pediatric physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R). My father, a PM&R doctor, encouraged me to rotate through his subspecialty as a medical school rotation. I never could have anticipated that this residency experience would lead me to change my career path. Now, as an attending physician in pediatric PM&R, I take every opportunity to introduce residents and medical students to the field and train them. Most arrive here intending to pursue a career working with adult patients. After spending two months training alongside my colleagues and me, many have changed their career paths to focus exclusively on caring for kids. I build relationships with my patients by showing an interest in their lives outside of their medical needs. I talk with them and ask questions about things that are important to them, like their favorite toys, TV shows or activities. I try to see them for the unique human beings they are and build a sense of trust. Building a strong relationship helps me to better understand my patients and what is most important to them. This allows me to give the right support and help each one work toward reaching his or her goals and dreams. Dr. Shieh is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Developmental Expressive Language Disorder. Her top areas of expertise are Cerebral Palsy, Spastic Diplegia Infantile Type, Concussion, Neurogenic Bowel, and Osteotomy.

What is the definition of Developmental Expressive Language Disorder?

Developmental expressive language disorder is a condition in which a child has lower than normal ability in vocabulary, saying complex sentences, and remembering words. However, a child with this disorder may have the normal language skills needed to understand verbal or written communication.

When should I see a Developmental Expressive Language Disorder doctor near Wilmington, DE?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Developmental Expressive Language Disorder doctor near Wilmington, DE?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Developmental Expressive Language Disorder doctors near Wilmington, DE?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Developmental Expressive Language Disorder doctors near Wilmington, DE?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Developmental Expressive Language Disorder doctor near Wilmington, DE?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Developmental Expressive Language Disorder doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Developmental Expressive Language Disorder doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Developmental Expressive Language Disorder doctor near Wilmington, DE?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Developmental Expressive Language Disorder doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Developmental Expressive Language Disorder doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Developmental Expressive Language Disorder doctors near Wilmington, DE?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Developmental Expressive Language Disorder doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Developmental Expressive Language Disorder doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Developmental Expressive Language Disorder doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
