Experienced in Encephalitis

Overview

I care for people living with seizures and epilepsy, including those with drug-resistant epilepsy. My focus is on finding the most effective and safest treatment strategy for each person; whether that’s medication, evaluation for epilepsy surgery, or neuromodulation therapies. I also work to identify related challenges like anxiety, depression, sleep, and/or cognitive issues, which can greatly affect quality of life. I chose this field because every seizure tells a story. No two journeys are the same and I believe that medical care should reflect that. I take the time to listen, understand, and partner with patients and their families to create a plan that supports their goals. Outside of work, I enjoy hiking, playing the piano, and spending time with my family.

I am a neurologist who focuses on multiple sclerosis and related inflammatory conditions of the brain. I attended Duke as an undergraduate student and then again as a neurology resident and fellow. After a career in the Navy, I returned to Duke as part of the faculty in 2002. I am proud to be a part of the Department of Neurology because of its commitment to expanding expertise in the area of multiple sclerosis, not just for our own patients, but for people worldwide. I love the challenge of figuring out the best treatment for each individual I care for, and I am passionate about educating patients about the risks and benefits of the different therapies available so they can partner with me in making decisions about their health. I am committed to providing the best care possible to my patients and giving them hope for the future. Dr. Skeen is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in the treatment of Encephalitis. His top areas of expertise are Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Relapsing Multiple Sclerosis (RMS), Encephalitis, and Anti-NMDA Receptor Encephalitis.

"Neurologic conditions can be scary, and neuroimmunologic conditions even more so. It's easy to feel in the dark about what is happening. I approach patient care with just as much attention to empowering education as I do to disease management. I strive to ""turn the lights on"" so people know more about their conditions, what to expect, and (most importantly) what we can do about them. If we ever meet, don't be surprised if I quote John Steinbeck or offer advice on your next mobile device.". Dr. Lee Hartsell Iii is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in the treatment of Encephalitis. His top areas of expertise are Neuromyelitis Optica, Optic Neuritis, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), and Relapsing Multiple Sclerosis (RMS).
