Overview
"Jaime Humberto Nieto, MD, MBA, MS is a board certified neurosurgeon affiliated with over a dozen hospitals, including North Shore University Hospital, Lenox Hill Hospital, Long Island Jewish Medical Center, and South Shore University Hospital. He also serves as an Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.
Dr. Nieto has been a practicing neurosurgeon for over 18 years, serving patient populations across Brooklyn and Queens. This considerable body of work has allowed Dr. Nieto to hone his expertise in all areas of neurosurgery including general, vascular and trauma, most notably degenerative spine conditions and spine trauma.
When it comes to working with patients, Dr. Nieto places emphasis on compassion and reassurance. He understands that surgery or even considering it can be a stressful experience, so he insists on answering all his patients' questions about the intricacies of their procedures. He treats patients like family, guiding them along the difficult road of an operation and possible aftereffects.
A great deal of Dr. Nieto's career research has focused on the spine; spinal cord tumors, degenerative spinal cord issues, and the desire to develop more minimally invasive endoscopic surgery options. During his residency he took a course at the Christopher Reeve Spinal Injury Center at UC Irvine, and was inspired along with colleagues to develop a spinal cord injury model, which has since evolved into a cutting-edge nonhuman primate research model that receives stem cell injections, nerve grafts and synthetic nerves.
Dr. Nieto graduated from medical school at SUNY Upstate Medical University, and completed his residency at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He completed an in-residency he completed a fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic.
Dr. Nieto is a member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the North American Spine Society, the Academy of Neuroscience, and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Nieto's robust discoveries in this arena have been featured in publications such as Neuroscience and the Journal of Neuroscience, and he has presented before the Society of Neuroscience and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. He is a 2019 recipient of El Diario's ""El Award"" for his achievements as a Latino member of the surgical community.
