I was eager to work at an institution like Nemours for the opportunity to teach medical students and residents, our physicians of the future. I’ve wanted to be a doctor for as long as I can remember, and I always wanted to treat kids. Children are truly in the moment, even during an emergency. My job is to provide care and reduce their stress. Kids are fun, happy and resilient. They tend to respond well to treatment, which is very satisfying for their caregivers! I like that kids seldom hold a grudge. Even if I have to do a procedure or give them a shot, they’ll typically high-five me when it’s over. No one plans to visit the Emergency Department, so the idea of being there for children and families when they really need help is a big reason I enjoy coming to work each day. I would be happiest if my patients never got hurt or sick in the first place, which is why I try to encourage safety and prevention at each visit. I try hard to make stressful situations less scary for patients and families. Because children tend to play outside year-round here in Florida, we see a lot more injuries. My goal is to offer great care with a minimum of delay and drama. Dr. Ellman is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Genetic Epilepsy with Febrile Seizures Plus (GEFS+). Medicine seems to run in my family. My father trained as a physician in Iceland, and my childhood was split between the US and Reykjavik, Iceland. At first, I wanted to be a veterinarian, but once in medical school I had my heart set on Pediatrics from the start. I love kids. With eight children of my own I have realized that every child is unique and that there is no one right way to parent. Parents can be certain that I will be upfront with them regarding their child’s illness. I treat people the way I want to be treated when I step into a physician’s office with one of my kids. I try to listen more than I speak and learn from others at every opportunity. To me the treatment of a child is a collaboration between the child, his/her parents and the physician and team at Nemours. Together we will find the best solution, always. I began my medical education in India, then moved to Brooklyn, New York for a residency in pediatrics. After caring for children as a general pediatrician for several years, I entered a fellowship program in pediatric emergency medicine. I also completed a fellowship in emergency ultrasound so I could bring that technology to help my patients. I think kids should always be happy and playful. So when they’re not, I like to be there with my team to do everything we can to get them well and happy again. Helping children heal is a wonderful, fulfilling experience for everyone involved. My passion is to be there for the child. By helping both the child and family to the very best of my ability, I can help make a difficult situation easier. One of the ways I contribute to quality care is by using new technologies in my work. I’m well aware that an emergency room is not where a family likes to spend their free time. It’s normal to have concerns, and part of my job is listening to and addressing the concerns of parents and other family members. They are a child’s most important caregivers, and I’m here to support them. Originally from El Salvador, Dr. Bolaños is an experienced, caring, board-certified pediatrician. She’s been serving children and their families for more than two decades in Central Florida via her previous practice, My Kid’s Doctor, and abroad through various medical mission trips and community outreach projects. Well known for her ability to tailor effective and personalized care, Dr. Bolaños is passionate about establishing a strong foundation for a healthy life in childhood, being an advocate for her patients, and learning from them as well, all while teaching and empowering families. I believe promoting healthy development from infancy to adulthood aligns with the famous proverb: “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Children are a blessing. Each one is like a seed that, with the proper care and attention, has the potential to grow into a mighty and robust tree that is not easily swayed by the winds of life. Investing in that growth further enriches my love for pediatric medicine. I will never forget about a young orphan girl I met in Haiti. When I asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up, she said, “I want to be like you, to help my nine siblings and all of my friends.” Today, 11 years later, she is a prominent nurse in her community.  For the past 25 years, doing medical missions has taught me the huge difference our role modeling, compassion, care, kindness and love can make in the developing lives of our children. I believe that once they are established in love, safety and encouragement, they will feel empowered to do great things. My medical interests include: Medical Missions Asthma Prevention I am passionate about empowering children and working collaboratively with their families to reach their full potential. Childhood should be a joyful and fruitful journey for our kids, and I hope to help embolden them to make healthy choices for themselves physically, emotionally and spiritually. I believe that they thrive when surrounded by kindness, encouragement and by our actions of helping others, because they too will one day grow into wholesome and thoughtful young adults who will be willing to extend their hands for those in need. I’m a board-certified general pediatrician with a passion for delivering high-quality, culturally competent and patient-centered healthcare services to underserved populations. I have extensive public health professional experience in the United States Peace Corps, USAID, Family Health International, and other international organizations that work towards decreasing childhood mortality. I believe that health and education are human rights, not privileges. Every human being has a right to be healthy and to live up to his/her potential. It is our responsibility as a society to ensure that. I was brought up in a home where community service and serving others was not an “extracurricular” activity to be done in your spare time, but rather an integral part of your life. My parents are very religious and raised me in the church. I truly believe God created me to serve others and gave me the personal characteristics I needed to be a compassionate physician. I chose to treat children rather than adults because I believe in preventive medicine, not reactive medicine. I would rather help families keep their children healthy than help them after the kids get diabetes, depression, or other illnesses. Pediatrics is one of the few specialties that allows for preventive medicine through immunizations, anticipatory guidance, and teaching of healthy habits. I’m passionate about:Helping children access health and educationProviding culturally competent carePracticing evidence-based medicineFollowing standards of care, andProviding the highest quality care to my patients I treat every child as an individual, but I also understand that children do not exist in a vacuum. They are part of a family, which lives in a community within a nation. All of these other levels influence the health of the child and all of them need to be kept in mind when dealing with the child. I try to be respectful of the family’s cultural and religious beliefs and to provide culturally competent care to each child. What is the definition of Genetic Epilepsy with Febrile Seizures Plus (GEFS+)?

Genetic epilepsy with febrile seizures plus (GEFS+) is a spectrum of seizure disorders of varying severity. GEFS+ is usually diagnosed in families whose members have a combination of febrile seizures, which are triggered by a high fever, and recurrent seizures (epilepsy) of other types, including seizures that are not related to fevers (afebrile seizures). The additional seizure types usually involve both sides of the brain (generalized seizures); however, seizures that involve only one side of the brain (partial seizures) occur in some affected individuals. The most common types of seizure in people with GEFS+ include myoclonic seizures, which cause involuntary muscle twitches; atonic seizures, which involve sudden episodes of weak muscle tone; and absence seizures, which cause loss of consciousness for short periods that appear as staring spells.

When should I see a Genetic Epilepsy with Febrile Seizures Plus (GEFS+) doctor near Kissimmee, FL?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Genetic Epilepsy with Febrile Seizures Plus (GEFS+) doctor near Kissimmee, FL?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Genetic Epilepsy with Febrile Seizures Plus (GEFS+) doctors near Kissimmee, FL?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Genetic Epilepsy with Febrile Seizures Plus (GEFS+) doctors near Kissimmee, FL?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Genetic Epilepsy with Febrile Seizures Plus (GEFS+) doctor near Kissimmee, FL?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Genetic Epilepsy with Febrile Seizures Plus (GEFS+) doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Genetic Epilepsy with Febrile Seizures Plus (GEFS+) doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Genetic Epilepsy with Febrile Seizures Plus (GEFS+) doctor near Kissimmee, FL?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Genetic Epilepsy with Febrile Seizures Plus (GEFS+) doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Genetic Epilepsy with Febrile Seizures Plus (GEFS+) doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Genetic Epilepsy with Febrile Seizures Plus (GEFS+) doctors near Kissimmee, FL?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Genetic Epilepsy with Febrile Seizures Plus (GEFS+) doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Genetic Epilepsy with Febrile Seizures Plus (GEFS+) doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Genetic Epilepsy with Febrile Seizures Plus (GEFS+) doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
