I was born in Chapel Hill and grew up in the mountains of North Carolina before going to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for college and Wake Forest University for medical school, and so practicing in North Carolina came naturally. I have been practicing internal medicine in Burlington since 1999 and greatly enjoy talking to and caring for my patients, who are also my friends and neighbors. I am actively involved with health care administration at the local and regional level to try to improve how we provide health care in our community. I spend my time away from work trying to keep up with my wife and children, who are always on the go. I specialize in sleep medicine and pulmonary medicine. In sleep medicine, we are looking at patients with sleep-disordered breathing and other conditions, such as narcolepsy. It’s a fairly common problem and causes so many other symptoms that many times it is missed. A lot of patients may experience fatigue, trouble falling asleep, daytime sleepiness, and loud snoring, and the spouse may observe stoppages in breathing. Patients may also experience difficulty concentrating, acid reflux, headaches, erectile dysfunction, high blood pressure, and even cardiac issues. My job is to diagnose sleep disorders so we can resolve these issues. I also practice pulmonary medicine, mostly treating patients with COPD. I try to put myself in the patient’s shoes. That approach works well and helps me get a better feel for what my patient may be going through. My favorite part is meeting people, getting to know them and becoming a detective as to what is going on and how I can fix it. That technical approach gives me great satisfaction. My path to becoming a doctor was nontraditional. After two years of college, I bought a family photography business and worked with my wife in the studio. Ten years later, the studio was asked to do the photography for a marketing campaign for the local hospital. Listening to the stories of patients and doctors in the campaign inspired me to pursue a career in medicine. My journey through medical school led me to pursue internal medicine as a specialty. I love that it gives me the ability to treat a wide range of medical problems and feel that it plays an important part in helping me to care for my patient’s overall health needs. My wife and I were high school sweethearts growing up in Georgia and have enjoyed living in North Carolina for many years. The people in this area have been good to us, and I wish to return that kindness through the great medical care. I am an interventional cardiologist who helps patients in the cardiac catheterization lab by performing procedures like inserting stents and pacemakers. I also provide care in general cardiology and follow patients with coronary disease, congestive heart failure, and atrial fibrillation.  I have spent more than 20 years at the Kernodle Clinic and helped establish and design its cath lab. I view my patients as family members and try to be conservative about when to intervene. I know there are always risks and drawbacks to any intervention, so I use good judgment to determine when a procedure is warranted. Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my two children, playing golf and going on winter skiing trips with my family. What is the definition of Glucocorticoid-Remediable Aldosteronism?

Glucocorticoid-remediable aldosteronism is one of three types of familial hyperaldosteronism. Aldosterone is a hormone manufactured by the adrenal glands which helps the body retain water and sodium and excrete potassium. It is caused by a fusion of the CYP11B1 and CYP11B2 genes and is inherited in an autosomal dominant manner. These individuals are also at an increased risk for a certain type of stroke known as a hemorrhagic stroke. First-line therapy consists of a steroid such as prednisone, dexamethasone, or hydrocortisone. This will often correct the overproduction of aldosterone, lower the blood pressure, and correct the potassium levels.

When should I see a Glucocorticoid-Remediable Aldosteronism doctor near Burlington, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Glucocorticoid-Remediable Aldosteronism doctor near Burlington, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Glucocorticoid-Remediable Aldosteronism doctors near Burlington, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Glucocorticoid-Remediable Aldosteronism doctors near Burlington, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Glucocorticoid-Remediable Aldosteronism doctor near Burlington, NC?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Glucocorticoid-Remediable Aldosteronism doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Glucocorticoid-Remediable Aldosteronism doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Glucocorticoid-Remediable Aldosteronism doctor near Burlington, NC?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Glucocorticoid-Remediable Aldosteronism doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Glucocorticoid-Remediable Aldosteronism doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Glucocorticoid-Remediable Aldosteronism doctors near Burlington, NC?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Glucocorticoid-Remediable Aldosteronism doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Glucocorticoid-Remediable Aldosteronism doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Glucocorticoid-Remediable Aldosteronism doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
