I specialize in the treatment of gastrointestinal (GI) cancers with a focus on clinical trials. Clinical trial patients can come to me at any point during their disease, but they usually come to me looking for an alternative therapy once standard treatments have not been effective. I decided to become a doctor later in my career. I originally graduated from university with a non-science degree, but the excitement of advancing medical breakthroughs inspired me to start a career in medicine. As a Duke physician, I enjoy the diverse experiences that I get to have each week. In addition to taking care of patients and conducting research, I work closely with other doctors on crafting treatment plans. I also find it fulfilling to be able to apply my research to patient care. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family, jogging and skiing. Dr. Strickler is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in the treatment of Lynch Syndrome. His top areas of expertise are Colorectal Cancer, Pancreatic Cancer, Ampullary Cancer, and Familial Colorectal Cancer.

I decided to go to medical school during the early part of college and then never really looked back. I enjoyed every discipline while I was in medical school and had a difficult time selecting a specialty, until I did a rotation in Hematology/Oncology. After observing the relationships that oncologists develop with patients and their families, I knew that medical oncology was the right place for me. Getting to know my patients and their families and helping them achieve their goals, despite a cancer diagnosis, has become extremely important to me. I also enjoy working as part of a multidisciplinary team to make sure that patients get the most comprehensive care possible. When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with family, reading, and running. Dr. Uronis is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in the treatment of Lynch Syndrome. Her top areas of expertise are Gastroesophageal Junction Cancer, Colorectal Cancer, Pancreatic Cancer, Stomach Cancer, and Pancreaticoduodenectomy.

My passion is the treatment of patients with gastrointestinal (GI) malignancies. I strive to take the very best care of my patients that I possibly can. Working with world-class colleagues and a multidisciplinary team, which includes radiation and surgical oncologists, makes this possible. I first became interested in oncology as a first-year medical student when I got to see tumors in my pathology class. I came to appreciate the beauty of the gastrointestinal tract while observing GI surgeries as a second-year medical student. My fascination with how cancers develop and how we may develop new therapies to treat cancer led me to pursue a PhD in molecular cancer biology. This training honed the critical thinking skills that I still use to this day, as I decide how to best treat my patients. The close relationships that oncologists have with patients and their families clinched my decision to pursue a career as a medical oncologist. During my fellowship training, I sought out subspecialty training in GI oncology. When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with my husband and four young children and running. Dr. Mettu is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in the treatment of Lynch Syndrome. Durham born and raised, my medical career started early as a volunteer here at Duke (remember candy-stripers?). Even as a teenager, I was drawn to the oncology world and the unique interactions with patients. As a physician assistant, I am able to help shape the quality care our patients receive and improve their experiences. Working in oncology helps foster an appreciation for each and every day and I try to celebrate this in big and small ways. I especially enjoy exploring our world and seeking out new adventures with my family. Dr. Mahon is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Lynch Syndrome. I specialize in the surgical management of benign and malignant diseases of the gastrointestinal tract (GI) tract. Specifically trained in laparoscopic resection of inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer, I perform the full range of colorectal operations, including reconstructive operations, such as ileal pouches. My clinical, research, and administrative efforts are all focused on implementing perioperative care practices that ensure best patient outcomes. Bridging specialties to best care for GI surgery patients, I particularly enjoy combined cases. For instance, I regularly operate with the pediatric surgery team on younger patients with IBD or pelvic cancer. Until my exposure to surgery in medical school, I thought I wanted the patient-doctor relationship well-known to primary care. With experience, however, I realized this relationship was possible in the practice of surgery. Colorectal surgery allows me the privilege of long-term relationships with a great variety of patients; close relationships with my colleagues; and administrative positions that promote the best care. I specialize in patients with gastrointestinal diseases with a special emphasis on colorectal and pancreatic cancer. Duke is a special place because of its compassionate clinicians and multidisciplinary care. Working in the same building with our colleagues in surgical and radiation oncology allows us to offer a holistic approach to cancer care. At the same time, we’re doing research on many of the cancers we’re seeing to try to move the field forward, and that gives patients access to clinical trials that are at the cutting-edge. When I see a patient with cancer, I know they are dealing with a major change in their life, and I know it’s very scary for them. I look at every patient I see as someone who could be my mother or my brother or my child. I take that responsibility very seriously. I love interacting with patients and getting to know them not just as patients but as families and members of our community. Dr. Blobe is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Lynch Syndrome. His top areas of expertise are Pancreatic Cancer, Familial Pancreatic Cancer, Familial Colorectal Cancer, and Pancreatoblastoma.

I am a medical oncologist who treats colorectal, pancreatic, and esophagogastric cancers while conducting research in tumor immunology and immunotherapy. My interest in oncology stems from experience in a cancer vaccine laboratory and working with oncologists during my undergraduate degree, who inspired my curiosity when I did not have scientists or doctors in my family. I conduct primarily laboratory-based and translational research, with the goal of finding new immunotherapeutic options supported by precision biomarkers to identify patients. In the clinic, I aim to treat my patients with innovative therapies, learn more about their cancer through research, and offer understanding through a shared decision-making process. Outside of work, I play guitar and trumpet, work on cars, and love to travel with my family. Dr. Devito is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Lynch Syndrome. I specialize in treating cancers of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and associated organs, delivering the medical oncology care. This often involves discussions of new cancer diagnoses, coordinating the necessary initial work-up, involvement of other cancer specialists if necessary (including radiation oncologists, surgeons, etc.). My other primary role as the medical oncologist is delivery of the medications to treat cancer, whether that be IV chemotherapy, oral chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or other non-chemo cancer treatments. While I treat all cancers of the GI tract, I am the primary specialist at Duke Raleigh Cancer Center for treatment of neuroendocrine tumors (or NETs, as they are sometimes called). Additionally, with my practice spanning both Duke's main campus in Durham as well as Wake County, I have the opportunity to lead and enroll patients onto some clinical trials when these are available. This offers the unique opportunity for carefully selected patients to receive treatments that are being studied to improve the standard of care treatments available. My practice philosophy is to care for my patients with the quality and attention to detail as if they were my own family. Dr. Coston is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Lynch Syndrome. His top areas of expertise are Methemoglobinemia, Neuroendocrine Tumor, Lymphofollicular Hyperplasia, Lynch Syndrome, and Tissue Biopsy.

I am a colorectal surgeon and researcher who has been at Duke for about 25 years. I see patients who have issues with the small bowel, colon, rectum and anus. These issues include benign tumors, cancers, hemorrhoids and fistulas. The best part of my job is operating. The operating room is a special place, where we have been able to put a number of processes in place so things run smoothly and we can give patients the best chance at a good outcome. The fact that you can take a condition, operate and potentially cure a patient is fascinating to me. As a faculty member, I also enjoy when I have the chance to teach residents during the operation. When I am not at work, I enjoy fishing, hiking and playing tennis with my children. Dr. Mantyh is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Lynch Syndrome. His top areas of expertise are Colorectal Cancer, Genital Warts, Familial Colorectal Cancer, Colostomy, and Ileostomy.

What is the definition of Lynch Syndrome?

Lynch syndrome, often called hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC), is an inherited disorder that increases the risk of many types of cancer. This includes cancers of the colon and rectum, which are collectively referred to as colorectal cancer. People with Lynch syndrome also have an increased risk of cancers of the stomach, small intestine, liver, gallbladder ducts, urinary tract, brain, and skin. Additionally, women with this disorder have an increased risk of cancer of the ovaries and the lining of the uterus (endometrial cancer). Women with Lynch syndrome have a higher overall risk of developing cancer than men with the condition because of these cancers of the female reproductive system. In individuals with Lynch syndrome who develop cancer, the cancer typically occurs in their 40s or 50s.

When should I see a Lynch Syndrome doctor near Durham, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Lynch Syndrome doctor near Durham, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Lynch Syndrome doctors near Durham, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Lynch Syndrome doctors near Durham, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Lynch Syndrome doctor near Durham, NC?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Lynch Syndrome doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Lynch Syndrome doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Lynch Syndrome doctor near Durham, NC?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Lynch Syndrome doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Lynch Syndrome doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Lynch Syndrome doctors near Durham, NC?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Lynch Syndrome doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Lynch Syndrome doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Lynch Syndrome doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
