Overview
Duke Health offers me a special opportunity to treat diverse pathologies in patients from all over the world. My choice to pursue a career as a hip and knee surgeon centered around the ability to achieve exceptional patient outcomes. There is no greater reward than fostering a close relationship with a patient, working with them to customize a treatment specific to their needs, and helping them return to the highest possible function with the least pain, whether just going for walks or returning to sports. I believe in a systematic approach to hip and knee pain, as well as offering a spectrum of nonoperative and surgical treatment options tailored to each patient. Whether you are younger and have never had surgery or have continued pain after a prior surgery and want a second opinion, I am looking forward to hearing your story and working together to improve your function.

The impact I have on my patients is what I enjoy most about being a weight loss surgeon. It is amazing that we can do an operation that not only helps a patient lose weight, but also fixes their diabetes, high blood pressure, and cholesterol, along with giving them a better quality of life. There are a lot of options these days for people who are considering weight loss surgery. It’s important for patients to take into account each institution and what resources they have available. Duke is fully equipped to take care of complex cases in a safe manner. We have a multi-institutional team that’s been around the Triangle the longest and has the most experience. Almost every patient comes back after surgery and we see some of their previous medical conditions go away. That’s a good definition of success. Dr. Portenier is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in the treatment of Malnutrition. I am a fellowship-trained, board-certified orthopaedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee replacement and reconstruction. My practice includes nonsurgical and surgical care for osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis (and other autoimmune arthritis), and avascular necrosis. I offer partial and total joint replacement, using minimally invasive techniques and cutting-edge methods such as robotic and computer navigation, 3D anatomical modeling, direct anterior total hip arthroplasty, and rapid postoperative recovery protocols with an option for outpatient surgery. My comprehensive approach includes medications, injections, physical therapy protocols, and other interventions aimed at avoiding surgery. I also evaluate and perform revision arthroplasty for failed joint replacements and specialized reconstructions for less common conditions.
