As a rheumatologic, I care for people living with a range of autoimmune conditions. As Director of the Duke Lupus Clinic and Duke Lupus Registry, I specialize in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and lupus related conditions. I was drawn to the field of rheumatology because of the complex, multi-system nature of autoimmune diseases and the many exciting advances in immune therapies. Rheumatology is a field where the most important part of my visit is listening and understanding my patients' journey. I work alongside an exceptional group of physicians, nurses, pharmacists, students, researchers, and staff. Together, our goal is to provide compassionate, comprehensive and state-of-the-art care for people living with lupus. Outside of clinic, I enjoy biking, running, and spending time with my family. My interest in medicine began as a child watching my physician grandfather care for his patients. When I went to college, I became an EMT to further my own interest in medicine. I was introduced to endocrinology during medical school by a physician who I consider a friend and mentor. I enjoy endocrinology because it explores and explains the complexities of the human body. I consider it a privilege to take care of patients every day. I value the opportunity I get to develop long-lasting, trusting relationships with them. As a specialist in thyroid cancer, I understand that the diagnosis of cancer is life-changing. I invest my time by listening to patients to understand their questions and concerns. My job is to provide them with the necessary information and tools to make decisions regarding their care. Then, we can work together as a team to develop a treatment plan which is most beneficial to them. The greatest reward is when patients trust me and indicate the positive difference this approach has made in their lives. Dr. Frieze is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Melorheostosis. His top areas of expertise are Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma, Thyroid Cancer, Follicular Thyroid Cancer, and Papillary Thyroid Cancer.

Women’s imaging is a technical and emotional subspecialty of radiology, and it is essential to have passionate, empathic and proactive physicians guiding patients through these deeply personal medical experiences. Watching my two aunts simultaneously battle breast cancer contributed to my passion for women's health, which I have been actively pursuing since the beginning of my training. I am approachable and compassionate, which allows me to bring a level of comfort and ease to interactions with my patients. I have come to recognize that it is of equal importance to make the correct diagnosis in the reading room as it is to be able to communicate the findings with patience and empathy. Having witnessed the diagnosis of breast cancer from both the patient and physician standpoint, I know the importance of the humanistic as well as scientific attributes of women’s imaging. I chose this specialty at age 17, inspired by my love for biology, math, and physics. I was fascinated by how energy emitted from molecules inside the body could be traced—where it travels, how long it stays, and what it reveals about health and healing. Nuclear medicine imaging offers whole-body insights at the frontier of medical science, revealing how organs function and detecting early signs of disease. It supports nearly every medical specialty in diagnosis, treatment planning, and guiding personalized care. I believe the human body has an innate capacity to heal—with the support of thoughtful, evolving medical knowledge. Just like nature, it adjusts and restores balance. Outside of work, I enjoy walking in the woods, watching the sky and rain, hiking, and practicing gentle yoga and traditional Chinese exercises. These rhythms of nature help me stay grounded and connected to the healing journey. Dr. June is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Melorheostosis. I enjoy partnering with patients on lifestyle modification and managing complex medical issues using both conventional and complementary approaches. I have a special interest in mind-body medicine. I started my medical career with seven years in private practice in Green Bay, Wisconsin, providing office-based, hospital, and nursing home care. In 2002, my family and I set off for the warmer climate of North Carolina in order to live in an area with a more ethnically diverse population and a longer growing season. I joined Durham Medical Center, a part of Duke Primary Care. In 2012, I helped create the Duke Integrative Primary Care Program. What is the definition of Melorheostosis?

Melorheostosis is a rare bone disease. It causes the abnormal growth of new bone tissue on the surface of existing bones. The new bone has a characteristic appearance on x-rays, often described as "flowing" or like dripping candle wax. The excess bone growth typically occurs on the bones in one arm or leg, although it can also affect the pelvis, breastbone (sternum), ribs, or other bones. (The term "melorheostosis" is derived from the Greek words "melos," which means limb; "rheos," which means flow; and "ostosis," which refers to bone formation.) The abnormal bone growth associated with melorheostosis is noncancerous (benign), and it does not spread from one bone to another.

When should I see a Melorheostosis doctor near Durham, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Melorheostosis doctor near Durham, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Melorheostosis doctors near Durham, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Melorheostosis doctors near Durham, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Melorheostosis doctor near Durham, NC?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Melorheostosis doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Melorheostosis doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Melorheostosis doctor near Durham, NC?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Melorheostosis doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Melorheostosis doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Melorheostosis doctors near Durham, NC?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Melorheostosis doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Melorheostosis doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Melorheostosis doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
