Andrew Lerner, M.D., is a clinical instructor of medicine in the pulmonary and critical care medicine department at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, as well as the director of interventional pulmonology at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center at Sibley Memorial Hospital. He practices out of Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. Dr. Lerner is part of the Sibley Memorial Hospital Lung Nodule and Lung Cancer Screening Clinic, the Multidisciplinary Pulmonary and Thoracic Surgery Clinic, and the Multidisciplinary Thoracic Tumor Board Conference. Dr. Lerner has an expertise in minimally invasive procedures for the early diagnosis and treatment of malignant and non-malignant diseases of the airways, lungs and pleura. He is experienced in advanced diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopy, including endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) bronchoscopy, navigational bronchoscopy, rigid bronchoscopy, tumor ablative techniques, airway stent placement, airway dilation, radial EBUS, conventional transbronchial needle aspiration (TBNA), bronchial thermoplasty, whole lung lavage and percutaneous lung biopsy; as well as percutaneous tracheostomy, tunneled pleural catheter placement, thoracentesis, tube thoracoscopy, medical thoracoscopy, chemical pleurodesis and upper endoscopy (EGD/PEG) placement. Dr. Lerner earned his medical degree from George Washington University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, followed by a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Lerner then completed a two-year advanced fellowship in interventional pulmonology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, including a chief fellowship year. He has been involved in multiple research projects in the field and completed a Science of Clinical Investigation Certificate Program at Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Lerner has been a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honors society since 2011 and earned The Johns Hopkins Hospital Patient Safety Star Award in 2016. Dr. Lerner has contributed to numerous presentations, lectures, publications, book chapters and abstracts. He is a reviewer for several research journals. Dr. Lerner has various research interests and is currently involved in research projects focusing on EBUS bronchoscopy, lung cancer diagnosis and staging, and other topics.
