Dr. David W. Boone

I grew up in Durham and I am extremely proud to work here at Duke. All of my family members still call the Bull City home. Most of my education was completed in Durham, except for four years I spent down the road in Chapel Hill. I played football there and developed an interest in orthopaedic surgery that led me home. I specialize in hip and knee replacement and am very fortunate to do so. We have the ability to help so many people with these operations. It is extremely rewarding to help someone get back to doing the things they want to do with their life. Duke is the kind of place where you are challenged by the most difficult cases weekly and I appreciate that fact. We have great doctors in every field and we work as a team on every aspect of a patient's care once they enter the hospital. I am an orthopaedic surgeon with a clinical practice focused on all foot and ankle conditions including complex foot and ankle deformity correction, limb salvage, trauma, and ankle replacements. Patients come to see me for a variety of kinds of conditions. That's one of the reasons I went into foot and ankle surgery. When it comes to treating patients, I try to exhaust all the non-surgical options first, because surgery can really intrude on someone's lifestyle. My passion is being able to reconstruct somebody’s foot when they can’t currently walk on it and allowing them to walk again. One patient story that stands out in my mind is of a woman who was involved in a car accident and broke her leg and several of the bones in her foot, and who lost some of those bones at the scene of the accident. She had seen several other providers, and they recommended amputation. When I saw her, I decided she would be a candidate for the new, 3-D printed technology, and I was able to do a 3-D bone implant, and now she's walking again. We were able to save her leg. I enjoy the challenge of helping patients with foot and ankle problems, including arthritis, tendon disorders or ruptures, and sports injuries. While my focus is my clinical practice, I keep my orthopaedic knowledge current by regularly participating as faculty in national and international orthopaedic foot and ankle conferences, conferences that frequently prompt me to bring advances to help the patients in my practice. I also continue to study many of the problems through dedicated foot and ankle research and share my clinical, surgical and research experience with national and international colleagues, the surgeons who attend the meetings, and the residents and fellows that I train each year.
