Why I entered medicine | I have always been interested medicine. Many members of my family are physicians. I had a great uncle who was one of the earliest neurosurgeons in Canada and two uncles who are surgeons: a neurosurgeon and a cardiothoracic surgeon. My father is also an orthopedic surgeon. They all have taken the time to share their interest and knowledge of medicine with me. During my undergraduate studies, I worked in a laboratory. I found out that working for hours on end at the laboratory bench was not for me. I enjoy interacting with people. I was accepted into medical school prior to obtaining my bachelor’s degree. I have many great memories from my years of training at the University of British Columbia, which I completed in 1990. I decided to specialize in orthopedics during my fourth year of medical school. I enjoyed being involved in the invasive procedures in all specialties. I won a gold medal in anesthesia, but I liked the satisfaction of fixing things in orthopedics. As an orthopedic surgeon, my father never pushed me into orthopedics, but he was happy to see me following in his footsteps. "Philosophy of care | A long-distance runner and former rower, I understand how devastating injuries can be to athletes. My practice is dedicated to helping injured athletes return to peak performance as quickly and safely as possible. | Why I entered medicine | My biggest influences were my great-uncle, Peter Savage, and my father, Thomas Brislin. My great-uncle was an old-time general practitioner. He would do house calls, deliver babies and even set bones. He loved three things: family, medicine and fishing. My father had an old-fashioned ""black bag"" and would have me or my brother bring it to him when he would get called into the hospital for a patient. I would make ""rounds"" with my father when I was 5 or 6 years old. I just felt a deep calling to medicine. I never thought of becoming anything other than a physician. During the summer before my senior year in college, I participated in a program for pre-medical students run by a cardiothoracic surgeon in Scranton. I became very interested in surgery after spending weeks with general surgeons, plastic surgeons, cardiothoracic surgeons, and, of course, orthopedic surgeons. I entered medical school thinking about neonatology, the care of pre-term infants. But I was more drawn to surgery as medical school progressed. I enjoyed orthopedics most of all, because I really felt that this specialty could allow us to help restore patients to full function.". Dr. Brislin is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Osteoarthritis. His top areas of expertise are Osteoarthritis, Bursitis, Tendinitis, and Tenosynovitis.

Philosophy of care | I have been caring for patients over 25 years. The central theme of my care is treating you (and every patient) with the utmost respect. We will make decisions together and I will treat you as if you are a member of my own family. I will use my expertise to explain all the particulars of your diagnosis and treatment options so that you can best make informed decisions for yourself. | Why I entered medicine | I decided to pursue a career in medicine at age 13 when my 11-year-old brother was hospitalized with a severe spinal infection. I never waivered in that decision, and found as I went through the process that I thoroughly enjoy helping others, finding ways to solve their problems and being their advocate through medical issues. I enthusiastically enjoy every day doing this type of work. | Community involvement | Since I came to this area in 1995, I have dedicated a substantial portion of my time to the community. I have served leadership roles at the local hospitals for 23 of those 25 years, have always treated everyone regardless of ability to pay, taken care of athletes for many hours on the fields and contributed to numerous local charities. I was honored to be inducted into the Warren County (N.J.) Hall of Fame for my community service. | Personal interests | My main interests are my children. My daughter works for the National Academy of Medicine. She received her master’s degree in Global Health from Duke University. She and I have traveled all over the world and pursue outdoor activities such as helicopter skiing in the Canadian Rockies, hiking Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, bungee jumping and doing a safari in South Africa, ice glacier hiking in Norway, and bar hopping in Copenhagen. My son just got drafted by the Chicago White Sox as a pitcher and I support his endeavors spending many hours on the baseball diamond. Our family has a thirst for exploration, adventures and loving and supporting each other. | Image | Lehigh Valley Hospital is ranked 25th in the country for orthopedic care on the 2025-2026 U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals list. Each patient's recovery to their fullest potential is my ultimate goal. | Why I entered medicine | For as long as I can remember, I wanted to become a doctor. I want to know not just what may be wrong, but about you, and what are your long-term and short-term goals. Philosophy of care | Because everyone has unique issues and concerns about their musculoskeletal problem, I spend time learning about what is impacting you and designing a treatment plan to accomplish your goals. I make sure you understand both the details of your condition and the treatments I propose. In this way, we can truly move forward with shared decision-making to achieve an optimal outcome. Educating the next generation of orthopedic surgeons is also a priority of mine; I am leading a team to build a new orthopedic residency training program here at LVHN. | Why I entered medicine | I still remember as a child accompanying my father (an orthopedic surgeon) on his patient rounds. I dreamed of one day helping patients return to the activities they loved just as did. I studied hard, became an EMT, volunteered at a firehouse, worked ski patrol in college and taught the winter care emergency course to my fellow patrollers. In medical school I found orthopedic surgery to be the most exciting path for me, and I have never looked back. I have found immense satisfaction over the years helping patients feel and function better, and am so gratified hearing I have changed their lives for the better. | Community involvement | As the father of two preemies (born 11 weeks early), my wife and I have supported research to investigate the causes of premature birth. We have been on the leadership team for the Philadelphia March of Dimes' annual March for Babies for several years. My daughter has started a non-profit to provide board books to families in the NICU so they can read to their children and enhance their language skills. I also have been an alumni interviewer for my alma mater, Dartmouth College, for over 20 years. | Personal interests | I enjoy skiing, hiking and biking with my wife, daughter and son. Philosophy of care | My philosophy focuses on an honest, patient-centered approach. I spend time listening to your needs so together we can generate a unique treatment plan that meets your goals. Prior to discussing joint replacement surgery, I attempt to exhaust all non-operative therapies. When we are ready for surgery, I use the latest technology and individualized modalities to ensure the best outcome. My goal as a surgeon is to provide you the same level of care I would want my family members to receive. | Why I entered medicine | I chose to enter the medical profession because it incorporates the art of human interaction with the science of medicine to help those in need. Early in my medical training, I observed how joint replacement surgery can help patients return to a healthy, active lifestyle. This inspired me to become an orthopedic surgeon, applying technology and my knowledge of human anatomy so you can resume activities you are passionate about. I feel so fortunate to be a physician who positively impacts the lives of others. | Community involvement | I participated in numerous charity races throughout the Delaware Valley. While attending medical school in Camden, I volunteered for numerous urban outreach organizations, such as the Ed Snyder Youth Hockey Foundation, where I served as a youth hockey instructor. I look forward to working with local volunteer organizations in the Lehigh Valley. | Personal interests | Outside of work, I enjoy playing golf, hiking new trails and spending quality time with friends and family. More importantly, I am a huge Philly sports fan and enjoy rooting for my Eagles, Phillies, Flyers and Sixers! | Image | Lehigh Valley Hospital is ranked 25th in the country for orthopedic care on the 2025-2026 U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals list. Why I entered medicine | I was 10 years old when I was diagnosed with a congenital abnormality of my right hip. At the time, I was an active athlete, and sports kept me focused. So, when I was told I would need two surgeries in two years and that I would be lucky to walk without a limp but likely not play sports again, I was devastated. I went for a second opinion, and when Dr. Tom Altizer told me not to worry, that I would be playing football in two years, I was hooked. Two years later, I was a triathlete and knew sports medicine orthopedics was my calling. From that point forward, everything I did in my personal sports career and schooling was to get me to sports medicine orthopedics -- almost to a fault, because while pursuing this dream I had a bit of tunnel vision to the other areas of medicine. Originally I was interested in sports medicine orthopedics as an academic rather than a surgeon, but a tragic accident in which I lost two close friends made me change my course. I landed in Orlando, Fla., where I started working with performance athletes and professional athletes. Dr. Palumbo is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Osteoarthritis. His top areas of expertise are Achilles Tendon Rupture, Osteoarthritis, and Frozen Shoulder.

What is the definition of Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disorder. It is due to aging and wear and tear on a joint.

When should I see an Osteoarthritis doctor near Bethlehem, PA?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing an Osteoarthritis doctor near Bethlehem, PA?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Osteoarthritis doctors near Bethlehem, PA?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Osteoarthritis doctors near Bethlehem, PA?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with an Osteoarthritis doctor near Bethlehem, PA?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Osteoarthritis doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Osteoarthritis doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with an Osteoarthritis doctor near Bethlehem, PA?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Osteoarthritis doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Osteoarthritis doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Osteoarthritis doctors near Bethlehem, PA?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Osteoarthritis doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find an Osteoarthritis doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Osteoarthritis doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
