The part about my job that I enjoy the most is being able to intervene on different cardiac issues a patient might face. I help people with blockages in different arteries and other heart disease complications in hopes of improving their quality of life. It has always been a dream of mine to go into medicine. I think it was a combination of the joy of science and having a positive impact on patients’ lives. I practice non-invasive imaging for cardiology. One of the things I love about being at Duke is that there are so many people and providers who have interests and research and abilities in every sub-subspecialty of medicine. Specifically in cardiology, there are treatment and surgery and procedures for everything. So a patient who comes to Duke for cardiology has all of that available at their fingertips. My favorite part of my job is meeting and taking care of patients every day, seeing new people and learning about them and how I can help them improve their health -- and of course hearing people say, wow I really feel better because of what we did two weeks ago. I really enjoy making that impact. Dr. Goel is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Peripheral Artery Disease. I came to Duke for cardiology fellowship training in 1985. I have always enjoyed the central role of the heart in human health and helping people manage their heart and vascular disease. As a young Assistant Professor of Medicine at Duke more than 25 years ago, I had the privilege of working in cardiovascular basic science with some of Duke's finest academicians. I then joined the faculty at UTSW-Dallas. Shortly after my arrival in Dallas, my daughter Abby, at the age of 3, became ill with a brain tumor. At that point, I decided to leave academics and enter private practice. After 10 years, Abby's neurosurgeon in Dallas felt that she was cured, prompting us to return to the Triangle. For 14 years, I enjoyed practicing cardiology in Raleigh with Carolina Cardiology Consultants. Given the complexities of today's health care systems, I am pleased to return to Duke after a 24-year hiatus, where I believe the best care is available to my patients. I have a particular interest in cardiac imaging and vascular medicine. My wife Darlene and I have three grown children Emily, Abigail, and Will, and have lived in Raleigh since 2001. I enjoy traveling, usually in a car, with my wife and any other family members who will join us. I truly love talking with patients and sharing stories about my life and theirs. Vascular disease can be complex and decision making requires a good relationship between the doctor and the patient. It is my job to educate the patient about their specific condition and what options are available. Ultimately, my hope is to improve their quality of life. I have been in practice since 1990 and have seen significant changes in my profession. In the beginning most of what I offered involved open surgery. Now we have vastly improved what we can offer patients, be it medical management, minimally invasive procedures, or if needed, surgery. Fifteen years ago exciting new options became available to treat patients with venous disease, and I began to specialize in treating patients with varicose veins. I was the first physician to perform an endovenous laser procedure in Raleigh, and this is the most common procedure I now perform. I married my wife, Pam, right after graduation from college. We have two children who both were married in 2016 and live in Raleigh. I enjoy surfing, travel, playing guitar, and am an excellent chef. Vascular surgery provides me the opportunity to work with a diverse patient population while treating a variety of disease processes. My first priority is always patient care. I strive to treat each patient with the same care I would want my family to receive. I enjoy the opportunity to develop long-term relationships with patients and establish continuity of care. In vascular surgery, there are multiple treatment options, including endovascular techniques, medical management, and open surgical techniques. Additionally, there is a wide range of disease processes, including deep venous thrombosis, peripheral arterial disease, abdominal aortic aneurysms, and carotid artery disease. I take a team approach with patients and their families to align treatment options with patients’ expectations in order to achieve the best possible outcomes. While away from the hospital, I enjoy spending time with my family, traveling, and enjoying the wide range of outdoor activities that North Carolina has to offer. What is the definition of Peripheral Artery Disease?

Peripheral artery disease is a condition in which the blood flow to the limbs is reduced due to a narrowing or blockage of the arteries. This narrowing of the arteries is usually caused by fatty buildup (plaque) called atherosclerosis. Peripheral artery disease more commonly affects the legs but may also occur in the arms.

When should I see a Peripheral Artery Disease doctor near Garner, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Peripheral Artery Disease doctor near Garner, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Peripheral Artery Disease doctors near Garner, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Peripheral Artery Disease doctors near Garner, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Peripheral Artery Disease doctor near Garner, NC?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Peripheral Artery Disease doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Peripheral Artery Disease doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Peripheral Artery Disease doctor near Garner, NC?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Peripheral Artery Disease doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Peripheral Artery Disease doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Peripheral Artery Disease doctors near Garner, NC?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Peripheral Artery Disease doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Peripheral Artery Disease doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Peripheral Artery Disease doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
