Dr. Chanu Rhee is an infectious disease and critical care physician, Medical Director of Infection Control at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He graduated summa cum laude from Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed his internal medicine residency, chief residency, and critical care medicine fellowship at Stanford University Hospital followed by an infectious disease fellowship in the combined Massachusetts General Hospital / Brigham and Women’s Hospital program and an MPH degree from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Dr. Rhee is internationally recognized for his expertise and contributions to the epidemiology, surveillance, diagnosis, and treatment of sepsis, particularly through the innovative use of electronic health record data to generate insights that inform clinical practice, quality improvement, and public health policy. His areas of focus also include infection prevention and control, antimicrobial resistance and stewardship, infections in immunocompromised patients, and the care of critically ill patients. He has been a leader in sepsis quality improvement efforts within the Mass General Brigham healthcare system and has participated in many national committees focused on enhancing sepsis care and outcomes, including in his current role as Chair of the Infectious Diseases Society of America’s Sepsis Advisory Panel.Dr. Rhee attends clinically on the transplant / oncology infectious disease service and the Medical ICU at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. In his role as Medical Director of Infection Control, he leads institutional efforts to prevent healthcare-associated infections, investigate outbreaks, and advance patient safety. He is an associate editor for Clinical Infectious Diseases, a member of the editorial boards for Critical Care Medicine and Critical Care Explorations, and a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America, and the American College of Critical Care Medicine. He has served as principal or lead investigator on multiple federally funded grants, has authored over 200 peer-reviewed articles, and is recognized by ScholarGPS as one of the world’s most highly cited and influential experts on sepsis.
