I am the first member in my extended family to enter the field of medicine and health. I did so, because my brother had a serious medical condition at early age that impacted me so much that I elected to get into medicine to help others. I believe an important part of providing medical care is educating the patients and their families/care givers about their condition and the care they get. This way they can make the best decision for themselves and their family. Personal Interests and Hobbies: My hobbies are spending time with family, outdoor activities (hiking, going to a lake or beach, swimming, sports, biking, etc.) and travel. I really enjoy international travel and before the pandemic traveled abroad at least twice a year.My overall philosophy is that I like to provide patient centered, collaborative, educated, evidence based care. I don't see myself as a one person show. I believe, I work as part of a team. I also like the team approach to certain pathologies. One of the things that worked very well, and got very high praise at my last job, was a neuro-oncology (or Brain; Spine tumor) clinic. One day a week, I would set up shop at the local cancer center, where I would first run a multi-disciplinary conference with Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Radiology and other services, followed by a clinic dedicated to patients with brain and spine tumors. Here patients would see me in addition to oncology and radiation oncology in one visit. This approach really improved the patient experience, improved outcomes and reduced complications. I would like to implement something similar like this in Redding. Dr. Widdel is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Porencephaly. He is also highly rated in 29 other conditions, according to our data. His clinical expertise encompasses Meningioma, Posterior Fossa Tumor, Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor (PNET), Laminectomy, and Awake Craniotomy. Dr. Widdel is board certified in Neurological Surgery. Dr. Widdel is currently accepting new patients.

Personal Interests and Hobbies: Motorsports, filmmaking, photography, psychobiology of creativity and motor performance.I am excited to provide my patients with the most cutting-edge surgical advancements in brain and spine surgery. However, I believe that compassion is just as important as technology. I work with my patients and their family members to educate them about their condition and treatment options so that we can make decisions as a team. I often advise non-operative therapies when I feel they are in my patients' best interests. When I give advice to my patients I look at them as family members and my guidance is the same I would give to my family, friends, or myself if I were in their shoes. As a medical student I became intrigued with the nervous system. The idea that the brain controls so much in the body and defines our thoughts and actions-and ultimately who we are- by using electricity and neurotransmitter molecules was simply fascinating to me. It was that nascent interest that led me to pursue research in the neurosciences with some of the world's leading neuroscientists to study how the brain stores memories. Ultimately, I found my true calling and decided to pursue the clinical neurosciences because I am, and always will be, a physician at the very core.  The defining moment that made me pursue neurology as a career came when I realized that therapeutic options and interventions that help individuals with neurological disorders had really exploded since I started my medical career.I maintain a healthy interest in technology and business trends.  I like to spend my leisure time with my family and close friends, and listen to music of many genres including Indian classical, classic rock, alternative rock etc.  I enjoy trying out new and interesting cuisines. Traveling to key world destinations in on my bucket list.My clinical care philosophy hinges on the principle of being able to do something for patients that would improve their quality of life in the face of often devastating neurological illnesses.  Listening with empathy, applying my professional skills with accuracy, and delivering safe and effective care with kindness and efficiency are the tenets based on which I strive to fulfill this core philosophy. What is the definition of Porencephaly?

Porencephaly is a rare condition that affects the central nervous system. People with Porencephaly develop fluid-filled cysts or cavities in the brain either before or shortly after birth. The severity of the condition and the associated signs and symptoms vary significantly based on the size, location, and number of cysts. Common features include developmental delay, reduced muscle tone (hypotonia), seizures, macrocephaly (unusually large head size), spastic hemiplegia, speech problems, delayed growth, and intellectual disability. Porencephaly is usually the result of damage from infection or stroke after birth. In these cases, the condition occurs sporadically in people with no family history of the condition. There is an inherited form of the condition called familial Porencephaly, which is caused by changes in the COL4A1 or COL4A2 genes and is inherited in an autosomal dominant manner.

When should I see a Porencephaly doctor near Orange, CA?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Porencephaly doctor near Orange, CA?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Porencephaly doctors near Orange, CA?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Porencephaly doctors near Orange, CA?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Porencephaly doctor near Orange, CA?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Porencephaly doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Porencephaly doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Porencephaly doctor near Orange, CA?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Porencephaly doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Porencephaly doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Porencephaly doctors near Orange, CA?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Porencephaly doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Porencephaly doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Porencephaly doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
