Growing up in Puerto Rico I was always reading – you can say I was a bookworm. And I love music. I started playing the flute as a child and I still play. I even made a music CD with other musicians. I’m married to a physician and we have three kids. My passion is helping others, especially children because we can make a difference before they grow and develop. We care for children with chronic illnesses, and because of that, we’re making a huge contribution in people’s lives on a daily basis. It’s my whole team. I’m proud to say we all have the same mindset and I admire my team’s dedication to helping children. I’m a clinician and a clinical scientist, which means I’m fortunate to be able to care for children today and, through my research, discover ways to help children in the future. At the end of the day, that’s more important than any amount of recognition or published work. Dr. Mauras is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in the treatment of Precocious Puberty. Nemours Children's Health, Jacksonville
I enjoy caring for children and helping families understand how prevention and a healthy lifestyle can help prevent disease and promote healing. I am also interested in clinical research that sheds new light on keeping kids healthy. My wife and I have three children, so I appreciate the family’s essential role in decisions that affect their child. As a pediatric endocrinologist, I have a unique opportunity to create a healthier future for my patients and at the same time, impact the health of future generations in their family. Human genome studies are advancing knowledge of how genes change and how genetic changes affect health. My goal is to provide compassionate care based on the latest evidence in an environment where patients and families are involved in decision-making. I am passionate about staying up-to-date in my field. When care and research come together, we can make real progress. I welcome challenging cases and work hard to achieve excellent results for my patients. I can usually treat any condition I diagnose. If I don’t have the answer, I work hard to find it, collaborating with colleagues at Nemours and around the country to find the best course of treatment. It starts with making the right diagnosis. This means that I must be aware of uncommon symptoms of common diseases, as well common presentations of rare diseases. It is very gratifying to find out what is wrong so I can get a patient started on the best treatment path for them and their family. Dr. Benson is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in the treatment of Precocious Puberty. He is also highly rated in 18 other conditions, according to our data. Nemours Children's Hospital, Florida
I grew up in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. From an early age, I loved learning new things and displayed an intellectual curiosity about different issues related to health conditions. Also, my father was a pediatrician who gave me the opportunity to follow his work. Having that chance to witness how rewarding it was to help families, captured my interest as well. He was my inspiration. Children have a pure appreciation for the work we do. I believe if you have a positive impact on the health of a child, you can impact the future of that child as well. Most of the children we care for don’t bring on their conditions – it’s out of their control. I enjoy the challenge of interacting with children and helping them to understand their condition. I’m passionate about finding which hormonal abnormality is behind the child’s signs and symptoms. I also embrace the challenge of finding the best therapy to treat each condition. I’m a big believer in communicating with the patient and family. And, I try to make myself accessible to address their concerns and needs. Dr. Carakushansky is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in the treatment of Precocious Puberty. He is also highly rated in 25 other conditions, according to our data. I come from a family of doctors who strongly believe in giving back to the community. They taught me very early on how rewarding it is to be a physician. I always aspired to become a pediatrician. Treating children is such an exciting and challenging field. Endocrine conditions are chronic and many are lifelong. It gives me immense satisfaction to take care of children, see them get better and watch them grow up to be healthy adults. I am passionate about providing the best care to my patients. They are my priority, and so are their families. The family-centered approach at Nemours means that I can take time to really listen to parents’ concerns and explain their child’s medical condition carefully. It makes a difference to them, and is more satisfying for me as well. I try to make a difference by keeping myself current on the latest research and treatment options for endocrine conditions. In this way, I live up to my responsibility to provide the best care to my patients. Dr. Gurnurkar is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in the treatment of Precocious Puberty. Dr. Evan Graber is a board-certified pediatrician who specializes in pediatric endocrinology. He has authored several papers about endocrine disorders. He is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Osteopathic Association, the Pediatric Endocrine Society and the Endocrine Society. I worked a lot with children throughout high school and college and I have always felt like I establish a good rapport with children and their families. I love coming to work every day.Endocrinology always interested me because it’s a field that allows a physician to follow a patient from childhood until he or she “graduates” to adult medical care. It’s really important for me to be able to see these kids grow and succeed, as well as being able to form a relationship with their families. I also enjoy the problem-solving aspect of endocrinology, where I can put the pieces of the puzzle together to get a diagnosis and hopefully improve my patients’ quality of life. Every child is different, every family is different, and I like to be able to personalize medical care. I also think establishing a dialogue with families is very important when it comes to providing good patient care. I am passionate about advocating for my patients. It’s amazing to me that in 2015, there is still a lot of misunderstanding about how to handle conditions like diabetes —mostly from community members who might interact with kids with diabetes. They’re scared of the condition because they’re not familiar with the care involved with diabetes treatment the way the families are. I think it’s important to make people comfortable with it, and help them understand that kids with diabetes can live like everyone else, and that there are set protocols that we teach children and families — there’s nothing to be scared of. When I describe diabetes to children I explain that they’re just like everyone else, they just have to do a little “extra.” I think it’s important to spread that message. I try to keep the lines of communication open between the families I treat and me. I want my patients to understand why I’m doing a given test. I find that families are more willing to discuss options when they understand their care, and they appreciate when I discuss why I’m choosing a certain treatment. It results in a better relationship with the family, and that improves patient care.I also try to make myself as accessible as I can. I’ll call families with test results, and will make time to see families if they need to come to the hospital to discuss things with me personally. I’ll advocate for my patients with insurance companies or pharmacies to get medications cleared. I want my patient families to know that I’ll work with them to make sure they get the best care possible. Dr. Graber is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Precocious Puberty. He is also highly rated in 25 other conditions, according to our data. His clinical expertise encompasses Short Stature (Growth Disorders), Idiopathic Short Stature (ISS), Familial Short Stature (FSS), Precocious Puberty, and Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT).
