I am a maternal-fetal medicine doctor and provide obstetrical care to high-risk moms, either because the mother could have a maternal medical complication or the fetus could be affected by a complication or an anomaly. My primary role is to help patients make an informed decision on determining when to deliver and how, meaning at what gestational age we should do a C-section or have a vaginal birth. These questions can be incredibly complex and there’s not a perfect right or wrong answer, so I help the patient and their families think through options so they can make an informed decision for their unique situation. Here at Duke, we foster a collaborative environment, which is especially important in this subspecialty, since the fetus will oftentimes have a condition that requires a pediatric team.
