"I can distinctly remember the awe and utter amazement I felt watching my first cesarean delivery. I knew that there was a baby inside the mother's abdomen, but it was amazing to see the doctors deliver it. To see it just ""pop out"". Still, to this day, I get that feeling of awe and amazement every time I help a mom deliver her baby. I feel so lucky to be part of such a wonderful moment in a family's life. As a maternal fetal medicine specialist, I take care of sick moms, sick babies, and sick pregnancies. Each day, while I get to help women and their families with big wins and happy moments, I also have the opportunity to help them through sad times and some of the worst moments of their lives. It is these hard and sad moments that make the happy ones even more meaningful. I also spend some of my time helping to teach medical students about Ob/Gyn. I really enjoy teaching, and sharing my love for Ob/Gyn with young learners is one of my favorite parts of my job. My other very important job is being a mom. I have three fantastic young boys that keep me busy and remind me on a daily basis how important family is. I love to swim and make jam. Apricot Jam is my favorite.". Dr. Dotters is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in the treatment of Preeclampsia. I am a maternal-fetal medicine doctor and provide obstetrical care to high-risk moms, either because the mother could have a maternal medical complication or the fetus could be affected by a complication or an anomaly. My primary role is to help patients make an informed decision on determining when to deliver and how, meaning at what gestational age we should do a C-section or have a vaginal birth. These questions can be incredibly complex and there’s not a perfect right or wrong answer, so I help the patient and their families think through options so they can make an informed decision for their unique situation. Here at Duke, we foster a collaborative environment, which is especially important in this subspecialty, since the fetus will oftentimes have a condition that requires a pediatric team. So we all work well together to tailor a plan that is specific to the patient and their needs. Dr. Wheeler is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Preeclampsia. Her top areas of expertise are Preeclampsia, Postpartum Depression, Endometritis, and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Infection.

I decided to pursue a career in obstetrics after observing a delivery during my first week of obstetrics training in medical school. The sheer excitement of every birth along with the knowledge of all of the possible complications faced by a mother was what attracted me to the field of maternal fetal medicine. Every day I feel privileged to be a part of this very personal experience for so many women. As a researcher in the areas of infectious diseases in pregnancy, I see it as my duty to help advance the care of women and their fetuses who may experience infectious complications. I hope to leave a mark on our field that leads to improved infectious disease outcomes for women and their children. I moved to the Chapel Hill area after many years of living and practicing in Rhode Island because of the outstanding group of physicians here. My family loves the area and getting out to explore all that North Carolina has to offer. Dr. Hughes is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Preeclampsia. I specialize in treating mothers who have infectious diseases that might affect their baby during pregnancy or develop infections while pregnant. As a researcher, I conduct clinical trials with the goal of improving pregnancy outcomes. I am trained in obstetrics and gynecology and have done additional training in maternal-fetal medicine. I chose to pursue maternal-fetal medicine because it allows me to focus on treating a complex medical problem for a short period of time, when the patient is still relatively healthy. Most of the medical problems I treat have a positive outcome. Pregnancy is a joyous time for the patient and their family, and I enjoy sharing in that happiness. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my husband and our twins. I also enjoy traveling, cooking, running on trails, and watching and playing golf. I am a doctor and researcher who focuses on women’s health issues. My research focuses on infection during pregnancy, specifically HIV infection. I’ve been at Duke for over 25 years. Women who have HIV could have a baby who does not have HIV, if given the right care. My goal is to achieve this result for all mothers with HIV. I consider myself to be a nurturing person who enjoys taking care of people. I view it as an honor to help women at such a sensitive and special time in their lives. I want my patients to feel like they are part of the care team, and that they are safe and in good hands. My favorite time of year is the holidays, when I get a stack of cards from many of the mothers who I’ve treated containing pictures of their babies. Outside of work, I enjoy walking my dog, hiking, working in my yard and exercising. Dr. Livingston is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Preeclampsia. "I specialize in caring for pregnancies involving maternal or fetal conditions. While I enjoy caring for patients with a broad range of concerns, much of my work centers on caring for patients who are planning pregnancy or who are pregnant while living with heart conditions or blood disorders. I enjoy building relationships with my patients during pregnancy and helping ensure safe and healthy births. Every day, I am reminded how lucky I am to work among so many talented colleagues at Duke Health. One of the best parts of my job is seeing how teamwork and planning can make our patients' birth experiences positive and memorable, even when a pregnancy is considered ""high risk"".". My particular niche in the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine is prenatal diagnosis, but I do a little bit of everything. The special thing about maternal-fetal medicine here at Duke is that the group is really cohesive in terms of getting along really well, working well together and having a variety of interests within the division. In addition, Duke also has a lot of other subspecialties that we work closely with and which have a lot of interest in pregnancy, so we’re able to collaborate with them. In medical school, I had a great interest in women’s health and loved my OB/GYN rotation and residency. I very much admired the maternal fetal physicians in my residency program. I had great respect for what they did. They were able to take the difficult part of obstetrics and still enable women to have a positive birth experience. That really inspired me. What is the definition of Preeclampsia?

Preeclampsia is high blood pressure and signs of liver or kidney damage that occur in women after the 20th week of pregnancy. While it is rare, preeclampsia also may occur in a woman after delivering her baby, most often within 48 hours. This is called postpartum preeclampsia.

When should I see a Preeclampsia doctor near Durham, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

      • Your primary care provider recommends it.
      • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
      • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
      • You need specialized testing or procedures.
      • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Preeclampsia doctor near Durham, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Preeclampsia doctors near Durham, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Preeclampsia doctors near Durham, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Preeclampsia doctor near Durham, NC?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Preeclampsia doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Preeclampsia doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Preeclampsia doctor near Durham, NC?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

      • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
      • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
      • Family history of disease
      • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
      • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
      • List of questions and concerns
      • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Preeclampsia doctor?

      Here are some sample questions:

      • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
      • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
      • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
      • Are there other specialists I need to see?
      • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Preeclampsia doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Preeclampsia doctors near Durham, NC?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Preeclampsia doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Preeclampsia doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Preeclampsia doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
