I am currently the chief of the division of Epilepsy, Sleep, and Clinical Neurophysiology. I see epilepsy patients and patients with sleep disorders. The epilepsy patients that I see often have a hard time controlling their seizures or have other epilepsy-related problems. At Duke, we have many options, including clinical trials, advanced medications, and surgical options, that we can offer patients to get them to a better quality of life with fewer or no seizures. In sleep disorders, I see many patients with sleep apnea and have a passion for treating individuals with narcolepsy. My philosophy is that I want patients to be aware of all the different treatment options that they have available this them. Together, we come up with what I, the patient, and the family think is the best approach for the individual. This way, we can individualize the treatment for each person. It is very gratifying for me to see patients doing so much better with the appropriate medications and pursuing the dreams they have and doing the things they really want to do. Dr. Husain is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of REM Behavior Disorder. His top areas of expertise are Seizures, Excessive Daytime Sleepiness, Generalized Tonic-Clonic Seizure, Microvascular Decompression, and Spinal Fusion.

When people think about sleep disorders, they usually report getting too much or not enough sleep. That is the starting point where we work together to get to the root cause. What I have discovered in treating patients is that sleep medicine is multifactorial - you address attitudes around sleep, mental health, wellness, as well as consider other medical problems. Sleep apnea is one of the better-known sleep disorders, and the good news is that we have better technology today to treat it. It is very gratifying when patients come back and tell me how much their quality of life has improved! When I talk to patients, other less recognized sleep disorders can also be discovered and treated, such as restless leg syndrome, abnormal sleep behaviors, and narcolepsy. It is not uncommon for more than one sleep disorder to be present. When I see a patient, my aim is to to get a complete picture about their sleep so success in treatment is achieved. Dr. Augustine is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of REM Behavior Disorder. Her top areas of expertise are Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Memory Loss, Seizures, Central Sleep Apnea, and Mastoidectomy.

I fell in love with neurology on day one of my clerkship year in medical school. To me, the opportunity to help patients and families through complex illnesses is simultaneously challenging and incredibly rewarding. I ultimately chose to sub-specialize in movement disorders because I enjoy being able to form long-term relationships with patients and families, and I'm optimistic that a disease-modifying therapy for Parkinson disease is within reach. I'm also a core faculty member of Duke's Trent Center for Bioethics, Humanities, and the History of Medicine, where I develop programs to help students and trainees understand the patient's perspective, improving clinician resilience and mitigating burnout. Outside of work, I am an avid runner and cyclist, looking forward to exploring trails around the Triangle. I see patients with memory disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. In almost every encounter, I feel like I see two patients: the person with the disease and the person taking care of the person with the disease. The caregiver often needs as much attention as the patient because they are under a lot of stress, so I offer helpful tips, advice, encouragement, and resources. These diseases don’t have cures, so I spend a lot of time talking with caregivers, diagnosing the disease, and helping families cope. There are some medicines we use for these diseases, but their effect is fairly limited, so we also try to treat side effects, such as depression or behavioral problems. It’s a partnership between the doctor, the patient, and the family trying to keep the patient as safe, happy, and healthy as possible. I am also involved in research projects and enjoy both seeing patients and studying their diseases in the lab. Dr. O'brien is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of REM Behavior Disorder. His top areas of expertise are Cerebellar Degeneration, Alzheimer's Disease, Lewy Body Dementia (LBD), and Dementia.

I am passionate about sleep and helping patients achieve good sleep so they can be healthier and feel better during the day. I have particular interests in treating patients with obstructive and central sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, narcolepsy, and idiopathic hypersomnia. For patients with sleep apnea who haven't done well with treatment in the past, I can often help make positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy more tolerable and effective. My approach to patients is to spend time gathering information from patients and their families. Families can provide very helpful information about patients' sleep that patients might not be aware of themselves. I then work with patients to develop a treatment that is mutually agreeable, as I think it's important for patients to understand and agree with their treatment plans. Whenever possible, I avoid using medications as most sleep problems can be improved without them. What is the definition of REM Behavior Disorder?

Rapid eye movement (REM) behavior disorder, also known as dream-enacting behavior, is a rare sleep disorder, or parasomnia, which involves acting out vivid, bad dreams during REM sleep by making verbal sounds along with often violent limb movements. REM behavior disorder can be associated with other neurological conditions, such as Lewy body dementia, Parkinson’s disease, or multiple system atrophy, and can occur with other sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea, periodic limb movement disorder, and narcolepsy, and usually occurs in men over the age of 50. REM behavior disorder may worsen over time. REM behavior disorder may also be related to other conditions, such as sleep deprivation, certain medications, alcohol withdrawal, brainstem tumors, and stroke.

When should I see a REM Behavior Disorder doctor near Durham, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

      • Your primary care provider recommends it.
      • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
      • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
      • You need specialized testing or procedures.
      • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a REM Behavior Disorder doctor near Durham, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank REM Behavior Disorder doctors near Durham, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by REM Behavior Disorder doctors near Durham, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a REM Behavior Disorder doctor near Durham, NC?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the REM Behavior Disorder doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different REM Behavior Disorder doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a REM Behavior Disorder doctor near Durham, NC?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

      • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
      • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
      • Family history of disease
      • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
      • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
      • List of questions and concerns
      • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my REM Behavior Disorder doctor?

      Here are some sample questions:

      • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
      • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
      • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
      • Are there other specialists I need to see?
      • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my REM Behavior Disorder doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female REM Behavior Disorder doctors near Durham, NC?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the REM Behavior Disorder doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a REM Behavior Disorder doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the REM Behavior Disorder doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
