Dr. Malcolm R. Debaun

I am an adult reconstruction surgeon here at Duke. I completed graduate school and residency training at Wake Forest University, followed by a fellowship in adult reconstruction at Duke. My choice to pursue a career in adult reconstruction was based on my passion for patient outcomes. I was truly inspired by patients’ satisfaction and the drastic improvement on their quality of life after total joint replacement. I enjoy the systematic approach to problem solving and the complexity of cases in adult reconstruction, especially in the setting of revision arthroplasty. My clinical and research interests are centered around periprosthetic joint infections, a disastrous complication which continues to pose a challenge to the orthopaedic community. Despite the progress made, our goal to prevent infection following arthroplasty surgery remains unaccomplished. It is not an exaggeration to claim that fear of infection lives in the heart of every arthroplasty surgeon who steps into the operating room. My mission is to provide a personalized assessment and treat each patient individually, based upon their condition and needs. I am an orthopaedic physician and work in adult reconstructive orthopaedics, predominantly with hip- and knee-replacement surgeries. I also help manage revision surgeries and take care of people with infections or fractures around their implants. I am interested in the whole continuum of care for arthritis and not just the surgical treatment of it. Even though I specialize in surgery, not everyone needs that treatment, and as an orthopaedic doctor, my role is to help direct the whole process. The care around revision surgeries at other centers is tertiary and many times not at the same place, but here at Duke we treat patients every step of the way at the same practice and have access to the latest treatments. I grew up in Durham and I am extremely proud to work here at Duke. All of my family members still call the Bull City home. Most of my education was completed in Durham, except for four years I spent down the road in Chapel Hill. I played football there and developed an interest in orthopaedic surgery that led me home. I specialize in hip and knee replacement and am very fortunate to do so. We have the ability to help so many people with these operations. It is extremely rewarding to help someone get back to doing the things they want to do with their life. Duke is the kind of place where you are challenged by the most difficult cases weekly and I appreciate that fact. We have great doctors in every field and we work as a team on every aspect of a patient's care once they enter the hospital.
