Dr. Judith N. Feick is a board-certified, primary care pediatrician with more than 25 years of experience in private practice. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (FAAP) and member, American Medical Association, Wilmington New Castle Pediatric Association and the Medical Society of Delaware. I’ve always wanted to be an advocate for people in need, especially children. One of the greatest joys of my life is seeing a child get better — and seeing him or her grow up over the years. In fact, some of my earliest patients have gone on to graduate from college, get jobs, have families of their own, and their children are now my patients. I could not imagine a day without kids in it. I like to stay up to date with the latest developments in medicine, from current events that affect us all to the latest breakthroughs in research and pediatric treatments. I do a lot of reading (for fun!) on medicine and child and adolescent development. I read textbooks, as well as pharmaceutical and medical journals. I love the science of medicine and I love the art of it too. I do it so I can be at my best as a doctor, and so I can pass on any useful info to patients and families about how to stay in good health and maintain proper fitness and nutrition. Nothing is more delightful to me than seeing kids get better and stay that way. In my work, I believe this involves being willing to go beyond what is required or expected, and really connecting to my patients on a personal level. They’re a part of my life and I hope they feel I'm a part of theirs as well.Outside of my work, I volunteer with church organizations, help raise money for organizations and am active in a women’s group. I've worked with Family Promise, a group that helps the homeless. I've volunteered with the Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts, and I have taught 4th and 5th grade classes on health and medicine. I have worked at career fairs at St. Mark’s High School. I have spoke to a group of University of Delaware students about medical careers. I'm also interested in mission work. Dr. Feick is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Short Stature (Growth Disorders). She is also highly rated in 1 other condition, according to our data. Her clinical expertise encompasses Obesity in Children, Developmental Dysphasia Familial, Delayed Growth, and Croup. Dr. Feick is board certified in American Board Of Pediatrics.

Preethi Kumar, MD, is a board-certified pediatrician. She is passionate about teaching families about ways to get and stay healthy. I get immense pleasure from treating children because these are the kids who see you for close to 20 years. You see them grow up. Over that time, you see children sick, you treat them to get well, you watch them grow, and you see them flourish. Sometimes those kids, once they’ve grown and started their own families, bring their children to us. I get a lot of satisfaction from that. I love teaching and explaining things to families. This is more than a job to me, it’s a passion. Making one child feel better, having one family comfortable and happy, I’ve done my job. At the end of the day, what I’m looking for is, “How many did I treat today? How many did I make happy? How many lives did I make feel better today?” When I see people walking out of here happy and healthy, that’s all I need. One big way I try to make a difference is through education and teaching. I give talks at schools.I try to make a difference to my patients by being available when they need me. I make a lot of follow-up phone calls. I talk with parents and ask about their other children. I talk with them if my families see me out shopping or in the community. I try to remember the little details, all as a part of knowing the family and building a relationship with them. Educating the parents gives them the best tools to make the right decisions for their child. Dr. Kumar is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Short Stature (Growth Disorders). She is also highly rated in 4 other conditions, according to our data. Her clinical expertise encompasses Common Cold, Food Allergy, Cluster Headache, and Obesity in Children. Dr. Kumar is board certified in American Board Of Pediatrics.

Dr. Evan Graber is a board-certified pediatrician who specializes in pediatric endocrinology. He has authored several papers about endocrine disorders. He is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Osteopathic Association, the Pediatric Endocrine Society and the Endocrine Society. I worked a lot with children throughout high school and college and I have always felt like I establish a good rapport with children and their families. I love coming to work every day.Endocrinology always interested me because it’s a field that allows a physician to follow a patient from childhood until he or she “graduates” to adult medical care. It’s really important for me to be able to see these kids grow and succeed, as well as being able to form a relationship with their families. I also enjoy the problem-solving aspect of endocrinology, where I can put the pieces of the puzzle together to get a diagnosis and hopefully improve my patients’ quality of life. Every child is different, every family is different, and I like to be able to personalize medical care. I also think establishing a dialogue with families is very important when it comes to providing good patient care. I am passionate about advocating for my patients. It’s amazing to me that in 2015, there is still a lot of misunderstanding about how to handle conditions like diabetes —mostly from community members who might interact with kids with diabetes. They’re scared of the condition because they’re not familiar with the care involved with diabetes treatment the way the families are. I think it’s important to make people comfortable with it, and help them understand that kids with diabetes can live like everyone else, and that there are set protocols that we teach children and families — there’s nothing to be scared of. When I describe diabetes to children I explain that they’re just like everyone else, they just have to do a little “extra.” I think it’s important to spread that message. I try to keep the lines of communication open between the families I treat and me. I want my patients to understand why I’m doing a given test. I find that families are more willing to discuss options when they understand their care, and they appreciate when I discuss why I’m choosing a certain treatment. It results in a better relationship with the family, and that improves patient care.I also try to make myself as accessible as I can. I’ll call families with test results, and will make time to see families if they need to come to the hospital to discuss things with me personally. I’ll advocate for my patients with insurance companies or pharmacies to get medications cleared. I want my patient families to know that I’ll work with them to make sure they get the best care possible. Dr. Graber is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Short Stature (Growth Disorders). He is also highly rated in 25 other conditions, according to our data. His clinical expertise encompasses Short Stature (Growth Disorders), Idiopathic Short Stature (ISS), Familial Short Stature (FSS), Precocious Puberty, and Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). Dr. Graber is board certified in American Board Of Pediatrics.

Both of my parents were in the medical field and strongly influenced the direction of my career. I became a physical therapist, which I enjoyed immensely, but I thought I could make a different contribution to patient care by becoming a physician. In radiology, we are part of the medical team that helps diagnose or exclude an illness and we help to direct the course of our patient’s treatment. Working with children is an amazing experience. Kids are so resilient and bounce back from all types of difficult situations. They each have such a unique perspective and we try our best to tailor our interactive imaging procedures to the child. Sometimes this involves providing anatomy lessons to teen patients, other times it involves just “getting it over with.” We aim to make our imaging procedures as interesting and as comfortable as possible. My areas of interest include: Pediatric Body Imaging  Fetal Imaging Child Abuse I try to provide the most accurate information based on our imaging studies to the patient’s medical team so that the child can be treated as quickly as possible. I am fortunate to work with an incredible group of medical practitioners at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children who share my passion to provide the highest quality medical care to all children. Dr. Harty is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Short Stature (Growth Disorders). She is also highly rated in 52 other conditions, according to our data. Her clinical expertise encompasses X-Linked Spondyloepiphyseal Dysplasia Tarda, Weissenbacher-Zweymuller Syndrome, Kniest Dysplasia, and Spondyloepiphyseal Dysplasia. Dr. Jeffery Campbell has been a pediatric neurosurgeon at Nemours for 20 years. His most notable work is with kids that have skeletal dysplasia and he acts as the neurosurgical component of our larger skeletal dysplasia program at Nemours. Most of his research has been in dwarfism and osteogenesis imperfecta (OI). Prior to Nemours, he worked in a private practice in Charleston, SC. When I was in medical school, I knew that I wanted to do something “brain-related.” During my fourth year, I did a neurology rotation and thoroughly enjoyed the immediate feedback of surgery. I split my residency time between pediatric and adult hospitals, but quickly realized that I loved working with kids. I was able to see kids get better and found the impact I had on them gratifying. My goal as a doctor is to have a long-term impact on someone’s life and treating kids was my path to do just that. I am passionate about providing the best possible care for all children. I enjoy being on the cutting edge of treating rare problems on the skeletal dysplasia spectrum and I take pride in people traveling to Nemours from all over the country to seek such treatment. I love that I can do things that can’t be done anywhere else. I believe that health care should be a team sport. I always advocate for team approaches, especially with complicated cases. I actively create multidisciplinary teams for many of my patients to give them the very best care. Dr. Campbell is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Short Stature (Growth Disorders). He is also highly rated in 80 other conditions, according to our data. His clinical expertise encompasses Achondroplasia, Increased Head Circumference, Syringomyelia, Bone Graft, and Adenoidectomy. Catherine Zorc, MD, is a board-certified primary care pediatrician. A former teacher, she works with families to get the best education possible for every child. She is also an advocate for foster children, working to make sure they get the medical care they need. I was a second grade teacher before I went into medicine. I saw how hard it was for families to get help for their children. I thought I could do more to help families as a physician, working alongside them to help their kids. It’s exciting to work with a family from the day the child is born until the child is grown up. I enjoy building a relationship with families, and helping families along the way as they raise their children. It gives you the chance to help families cope with illness from the beginning until the child recovers, or helping the family cope during the most difficult challenges. I’m passionate about helping parents help their children get the best education possible — from making sure the school fits the child’s needs to making any accommodations necessary.I want to support mothers who breastfeed. There is a lot that can be done to help get breastfeeding mothers the help they need. I work with Nemours Health and Prevention Services. I help Nemours partner with school systems to improve health for children. I’m also an advocate for children in foster care, ensuring they get the medical attention they need. What is short stature (growth disorder)?

A child has short stature (growth disorder) if their height is in the bottom 3% compared to most other kids their age, gender, and ethnicity. Proportionate short stature is when the child is short, but all body parts are in their usual proportions. In disproportionate short stature, the arms and legs may be short compared to the torso, or vice versa.

Not all kids with short stature have a growth disorder. Some are just naturally smaller. However, if a child’s height falls below the third percentile line on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention clinical growth chart, their pediatrician may recommend running tests to see if there’s something more going on.

      What causes short stature?

Short stature can happen for different reasons. Sometimes, it’s familial, which means being short runs in the family. There are also several genetic disorders, including achondroplasia, Down syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, Turner syndrome, and Noonan syndrome, that can lead to short stature.

Other times, it’s due to an underlying medical reason, such as not getting enough food to eat or not absorbing nutrients from food correctly. Chronic illnesses that put extra stress on the body, like congenital heart disease, kidney and lung problems, or digestive issues, can also affect growth.

Another cause is a lack of growth hormone, which is a special chemical made by the body that helps kids grow. If a child’s body doesn’t make enough of this hormone, they might not grow as tall as they should. When doctors can’t find a clear reason why a child is shorter, this is called idiopathic short stature.

      Which doctors treat short stature?

A pediatrician is usually the first doctor to identify short stature and may refer families to other pediatric specialists to help address symptoms. For example, if short stature is due to nutritional deficiencies, the pediatrician may recommend the parents see a dietician for guidance.

If short stature is due to hormone problems, a pediatric endocrinologist is the doctor to see because they focus on diagnosing and treating hormone-related issues like growth hormone deficiency, early or delayed puberty, and thyroid problems. Pediatric endocrinologists are specially trained to understand how hormone issues affect children as they grow and develop.

How is short stature (growth disorder) treated?

First, doctors will use different tests and tools to figure out the root cause of the growth disorder. Sometimes, they use X-rays to look at the bones in the child’s hand and wrist, which can show how fast the bones are growing. They may also run blood tests to see if the child is making enough growth hormone or other important hormones that help the body grow. Once they figure out the cause of short stature, they can create a treatment plan to help the child grow and stay healthy.

Growth hormone therapy is the most common treatment for hormone-related growth disorder. This entails giving the child regular shots of synthetic growth hormone, usually once a day, over several years. During this time, doctors will closely watch the child’s growth to see if the treatment is working. They might measure the child’s height every few months and adjust the dose as needed. The goal is to help the child reach as close to their potential adult height as possible.

When should I see a Short Stature (Growth Disorders) doctor near Newark, DE?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

      • Your primary care provider recommends it.
      • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
      • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
      • You need specialized testing or procedures.
      • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Short Stature (Growth Disorders) doctor near Newark, DE?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Short Stature (Growth Disorders) doctors near Newark, DE?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Short Stature (Growth Disorders) doctors near Newark, DE?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Short Stature (Growth Disorders) doctor near Newark, DE?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Short Stature (Growth Disorders) doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Short Stature (Growth Disorders) doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Short Stature (Growth Disorders) doctor near Newark, DE?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

      • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
      • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
      • Family history of disease
      • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
      • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
      • List of questions and concerns
      • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Short Stature (Growth Disorders) doctor?

      Here are some sample questions:

      • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
      • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
      • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
      • Are there other specialists I need to see?
      • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Short Stature (Growth Disorders) doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.
