Dr. Scholz received his pediatric surgery training at University Hospital Mannheim/University of Heidelberg, Germany, and Boston Children’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School, followed by a fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital/Johns Hopkins University. Before coming to Pittsburgh, he concluded further subspecialty training in pediatric hepatobiliary surgery in the liver unit at Diana, Princess of Wales Children’s Hospital/University in Birmingham, U.K. Dr. Scholz’s clinical interests include the full spectrum of advanced minimally invasive neonatal and pediatric surgery, including: congenital anomalies, robotic pediatric surgery, pediatric hepatobiliary surgery including biliary atresia and choledochal cysts, colorectal pediatric surgery, chest wall deformities such as pectus excavatum and carinatum, pediatric lung and esophageal surgery including anorectal malformations, Hirschsprung’s disease, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and hyperhidrosis. Dr. Scholz strives to minimize postoperative pain for children using minimally invasive surgical techniques in combination with the latest regional anesthesia methods. He focuses on new innovations in pediatric surgery as well as ultrasound-guided interventional techniques for children. He is co-principal investigator of several NIH-funded research projects and has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals as well as book chapters. Dr. Scholz has presented at numerous national and international conferences and is editor of the textbook “Diagnostic and Interventional Ultrasound in Pediatrics and Pediatric Surgery.” Dr. Scholz is a member of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), the American Pediatric Surgery Association (APSA), Association for Academic Surgery (AAS), Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), International Pediatric Endosurgery Group (IPEG), Chest Wall International Group (CWIG), German Society of Pediatric Surgery (DGKCH), and the European Paediatric Surgeons Association (EUPSA).
