Dr. Chen received her medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, where she was inducted into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Society. She then completed an integrated plastic surgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. During residency, she spent an additional year in the basic science laboratory investigating whole-eye microsurgical allotransplantation, and she also pursued elective training in gender affirming surgery at Mount Sinai and Oregon Health and Science University. At the University of California at Los Angeles, Dr. Chen completed a hand and microsurgery fellowship. Prior to joining Johns Hopkins, Dr. Chen worked at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, Texas, known to be the busiest trauma center in the country. In 2022, she was recognized as a Texas Super Doctors Rising Stars, a 40 Under 40 Houston Business Journal honoree, an Association of Women Surgeons 40 Under 40 honoree, a UT Health Houston McGovern Medical School 2022 Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award/Champion of Clinical Learning Environment, and she won the inaugural John P. and Kathrine G. McGovern Distinguished Faculty Award in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Dr. Chen is passionate about medical education and activism for diversity in surgery, for which she is a frequent national speaker and serves on multiple national committees. She has numerous publications and international presentations, and has won many awards for her work in clinical, basic science and education research.
