Overview
I am a cancer surgeon who specializes in treating patients with pre-cancerous and cancerous conditions of the pancreas, liver, bile ducts, stomach, and adrenal glands. I initially trained and practiced at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. During this time, I served one year on a forward surgical team in Iraq. Following this service, I practiced for 13 years as a surgical oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. In 2018, I joined the faculty at Duke University and now serve as the chief of surgical oncology for Duke Health. I enjoy getting to know my patients and delivering the highest quality of cancer care. I am dedicated not only to treating and curing your cancer, but also providing you with the highest quality of life. Operations for cancers within the abdomen are a serious undertaking, and I am committed to making sure that they are performed with the highest level of expertise.

I have dedicated my practice to surgical oncology of the breast, as I am passionate about helping women understand this complex and extremely personal diagnosis. Having walked through breast cancer with a family member, I recognize the importance of accurate risk assessment and informed decision making tailored to one’s own principles of health and wholeness. Duke Breast Risk Assessment Clinic
I became interested in medicine after my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. I strive to provide individualized care to my patients, making sure that they understand their diagnosis and all treatment options. My goal is to get to know my patients by listening to their concerns, so we can make the best treatment decision together using my breast treatment expertise. Having gone though breast cancer treatment with my mom, I understand the impact of the diagnosis on the rest of the family. Treating breast cancer patients is my passion. I have special interest in treating young women with breast cancer, those with genetic mutation, and women with increased risk of breast cancer. I also pay attention to cosmetic outcomes while completing breast cancer surgery using oncoplastic techniques. I also perform nipple-sparing mastectomy whenever possible and utilizing new techniques such as minimally invasive robotic mastectomy and nipple sensation sparing mastectomies. When I’m not working, I enjoy traveling and spending time with friends and family. Dr. Chiba is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in the treatment of Breast Cancer.
