My focus is on heart rhythm problems. As a doctor, I work with patients to come up with a treatment plan that helps manage their condition. This may involve a cardiac ablation procedure or implantation of a pacemaker or defibrillator. As a researcher, I spend a good portion of my time looking at health disparities with the goal of improving access to high-quality health care for people of all races, genders and ages. I’ve been at Duke since 1999, when I started my residency. I decided to become a doctor because I had an interest in biology while I was in college. I chose cardiology because it is highly technical and gives me the chance to really get to know my patients over the course of treatment. Focusing on the heart also allows me to make a greater impact on health care, since heart disease is so common in the United States. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, including my two young children. Dr. Thomas is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Ventricular Fibrillation. I am excited about electrophysiology because it gives me the opportunity to improve patients' quality of life and allows patients to live longer in many cases. I ultimately went to medical school because of a passion for helping people, lifelong learning, and establishing meaningful relationships with my patients. I strongly believe in patient engagement and patient-centered decision making. Therefore, I believe that it is important to spend time educating patients and discussing all available treatment options. I encourage patients and their family members to ask questions so that I can help them understand their health. I offer medical therapy and catheter ablation therapy to patients with atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, supraventricular tachycardia, and premature ventricular contractions (PVCs), and ventricular tachycardia. I also place transvenous pacemakers and defibrillators (ICDs), cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) devices, leadless pacemakers, and subcutaneous defibrillators. I also perform lead extractions. I have two children, and I enjoy cooking, as well as playing golf, tennis, and skiing. Dr. Pokorney is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Ventricular Fibrillation. I see patients who have heart disease, and I work to prevent them from having any bad consequences of that disease. I also see patients who are having symptoms and do diagnostic work to see what cardiovascular condition they may have to explain their symptoms. I also take care of patients who either have known or suspected genetic cardiovascular disorders. Our genetics clinic is one of the only adult cardiovascular clinics in the Southeast. We take care of patients who have a variety of cardiovascular genetic disorders or who have strong family histories of heart disease and want to come in for testing. Duke has a strong collaborative approach to patient care. We provide excellent care for patients who need routine care for more common medical disorders, but we also provide a high level of subspecialty care for those who may have rarer disorders. Dr. Shah is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Ventricular Fibrillation. I have been a heart rhythm specialist at Duke for more than 15 years. My favorite part of my job is helping people. One of the nice things about electrophysiology is that we have the opportunity to fix many patients’ heart rhythm disorders. We use technology and medicines to fix heart arrhythmias that weren’t available just 10 to 15 years ago. I think the combination of Duke’s excellent facilities, being able to use the best available equipment in the field, and the very talented people that work here is what makes Duke such a special place. I’ve always felt that it’s a great privilege to work at Duke and with the tools available at this institution. One of the main things I like about electrophysiology is fixing heart rhythm problems. I love it when patients are rid of a problem that they have had for a long time, and I can tell them they are cured. They can go do whatever they want and don’t have to worry about seeing a cardiologist again. A patient with a rapid heartbeat I’ve been seeing for about 10 years finally decided she wanted to have an ablation procedure. We talked about that a lot. She was very nervous. Finally, she decided to move ahead with the procedure. It only took about 90 minutes, and she was cured. She was very happy and couldn't believe that it was really gone. I practice exclusively at Triangle Heart Associates and Duke Regional Hospital, which provides easy and convenient access for patients. I am a cardiologist. I see athletes across the wide spectrum of athletic abilities who are concerned about cardiac complications and how that may affect their training or athletic competing. Many athletes have heart disease, or are at risk for heart disease, and have problems such as arrhythmias or fainting spells. It is very gratifying to work with an athlete who has the same goals that I do for competition and fitness, and to help them realize that they can stay active in the midst of treating their condition. The sports clinic is a great example of why Duke is such a great place to come, because we have expertise in such a broad range of areas. If I need advice or support from another colleague, not only will I get guidance, but I can easily refer patients as necessary for further evaluation and management. I am a pediatric heart surgeon specializing in the repair of congenital heart defects in newborns, infants, and children. I am extremely proud of the exceptional work we do here at Duke Children’s Hosptial. We have an incredibly talented team of providers who are deeply committed to delivering outstanding patient care. It’s a privilege and an honor to get to do what I absolutely love to do. Among the many positive aspects, I especially enjoy the initial meeting with the family of a child who may need heart surgery. For many expectant mothers, these heart defects are first identified on ultrasound during pregnancy. For defects that typically need early surgery, we offer a prenatal surgical consultation. In this conversation, I have the opportunity to carefully describe in plain language the nature of the heart defect, the treatment options and role of surgery, and the expectations for recovery and the long-term outlook. This important moment gives me a chance to meet the mother, establish a relationship, and begin our shared journey through the prospect of heart surgery for her child. Together with the expertise of my colleagues, we continually strive to provide the safest possible heart care for the children of our region and beyond. Dr. Clark is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Ventricular Fibrillation. His top areas of expertise are Tracheal Agenesis, Tetralogy of Fallot, Transposition of the Great Arteries, Truncus Arteriosus, and Heart Valve Repair.

What is the definition of Ventricular Fibrillation?

Ventricular fibrillation (VF) is a severely abnormal heart rhythm (arrhythmia) that is life threatening.

When should I see a Ventricular Fibrillation doctor near Durham, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Ventricular Fibrillation doctor near Durham, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Ventricular Fibrillation doctors near Durham, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Ventricular Fibrillation doctors near Durham, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Ventricular Fibrillation doctor near Durham, NC?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Ventricular Fibrillation doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Ventricular Fibrillation doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Ventricular Fibrillation doctor near Durham, NC?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Ventricular Fibrillation doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Ventricular Fibrillation doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Ventricular Fibrillation doctors near Durham, NC?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Ventricular Fibrillation doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Ventricular Fibrillation doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Ventricular Fibrillation doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
