Overview
Alicia McCarthy is a pediatric nurse practitioner with the Nemours Spine and Scoliosis Center and the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Program. I have known I wanted to work with children for as long as I can remember. Children are amazing — they bounce back from unbelievable odds and keep going, no matter what. Nursing combines my love of children and health. I think it’s important to work for children, who otherwise would not have a voice. I am passionate about working with children and families to maximize their functioning and quality of life, no matter what conditions or disorders they have. I am particularly passionate about working with children with chronic or complex medical disorders — every child deserves the best quality of life possible! I also love working with families to help navigate the healthcare system, and giving them resources they need to be successful. I have volunteered for many years at summer camps, including those for children with chronic medical conditions, or whose parents are sick. I also volunteer in a community garden that donates all food to local food banks. I’m proud to work at Nemours. We work with each patient and family as an individual, and treat them as if they are our own. I take that very seriously. I work with families to understand their concerns and answer every question. I strive to coordinate care so that families are not repeating information endlessly or going for needless appointments. I’ve also developed a mentoring program for spine and scoliosis families at Nemours. This program connects patients and families who are newly diagnosed with those that are more experienced in living with conditions of the spine. I’ve also developed numerous patient education materials so that families can reference the information we discuss in clinic once they are home. Finally, I’ve lectured on spinal care locally and nationally, and have conducted several research projects.
