Overview
In high school, I had an interest in injury and taking care of injured people. I also liked working with my hands and fixing things, such as old cars. Those interests and the fact that my dad was a family physician all influenced my decision to become a surgeon. Today, I am the Director of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Regions Hospital. The majority of my practice covers surgical critical care and trauma surgery, but I also have an interest in burn surgery. In the area of trauma critical care, my interest is in neurotrauma, specifically brain injuries. I have clinical and research experience in traumatic brain injury as well as shock and resuscitation. Beyond HealthPartners, I am an Associate Professor of Surgery with the University of Minnesota Medical School and site director for the University of Minnesota Surgical Critical Care Fellowship Program. As part of my involvement with the Society of Critical Care Medicine, I am the course director for both adult and pediatric Fundamental Critical Care Support courses, teaching residents, physicians, nurses and other health professionals about critical care. I am also a Captain in the U.S. Navy. I have 20 years of service, including six years of active duty. I have been deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom three times and I served in Afghanistan in 2010. When I work with patients, I spend a lot of time listening and explaining. I like to take as much time as necessary to explain in patient-friendly terms what's happening and why we are doing it. I often say, in surgery, the best analgesic is knowledge. The more patients can understand, the better. I was drawn to trauma surgery because of the human aspect. I try to understand what this situation could mean to the patient and the patient's family. That personal story and connection is very important to me. Outside of my practice, I enjoy spending time with my family, doing yard work and landscaping projects on my acreage, being outdoors, and tinkering with and rebuilding old cars. I am a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS). I am a member of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST) and the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST), plus I am on the military committee for both of these organizations. I am also a member of these professional associations: * Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) * Special Operations Medical Association (SOMA) * Pediatric Trauma Society (PTS) * Association of Military Surgeons of the United States (AMSUS) * National Neurotrauma Society (NNS).
