Dr. Burns graduated from University of Washington with a degree in Bioengineering. After completing medical school at Tulane University, he spent 12 years on active duty in the US Navy. Highlights of his military career include serving as a Naval Flight Surgeon with a Marine helicopter squadron, being the sole Navy Dermatologist in mainland Japan for three years, and teaching dermatology residents while faculty at Naval Medical Center San Diego. While in San Diego, he ran a large laser clinic and performed over 1,000 laser procedures a year.
After completing his military service, Dr. Burns completed a rigorous Mohs fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center, a global leader in cancer treatment and research. In addition to gaining experience treating the most challenging skin cancers, he was involved with clinical trials studying the next generation of cancer treatment, immunotherapy and targeted therapy, for locally advanced and un-resectable skin cancers.
Dr. Burns practices full scope dermatology, including general, pediatric, cosmetic, and surgical dermatology. His emphasis is on pragmatic, patient-centered, and evidence-based care. Although he loves all aspects of Dermatology, he has strong interests in skin cancer, lasers, scar management, and skin surgery. Dr. Burns is a passionate educator having been recognized with teaching awards. He thoroughly enjoys helping patients understand their medical issues and developing effective treatment plans.
His clinical expertise encompasses Basal Cell Skin Cancer, Nevoid Basal Cell Carcinoma Syndrome, Seborrheic Keratosis, and Warts.
Dr. Burns is board certified in Dermatology, Certified By The American Board Of Dermatology and Micrographic Surgery And Dermatologic Oncology, Certified By The American Board Of Dermatology. He is actively involved in clinical research, co-authoring 5 peer reviewed articles.
