Overview
Dr. Efren Chavez is board certified in internal medicine and nephrology. He is also a certified hypertension specialist by the AHSCP. He is a faculty member at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Division of Nephrology. He is a consultant in the UAB Rare Genetic Kidney Disease Clinic and the UAB Polycystic Kidney Disease Center of Excellence. He has a clinical and research interest in Alport syndrome. He is a member of the Alport Syndrome Foundation Medical Advisory Committee. He has authored review articles on Alport syndrome and has authored book chapters in other hereditary kidney diseases. He has participated as principal investigator or co-investigator on numerous industry-sponsored clinical trials for Alport syndrome, including those from Bayer, Enyo and River 3 Renal Corp. Currently, he is a participant of the ALPREG study which aims to evaluate maternal and neonatal outcomes in women with Alport syndrome; and he is a member of the ASF data mining and statistics workgroup.
