He completed his residency in pediatrics at Seattle Children's Hospital, an affiliate of the University of Washington. After completing a fellowship in medical genetics at Stanford University, he joined UCSF. Shieh is a member of the American Society of Human Genetics. His work has received support from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, which is part of the National Institutes of Health.
