He later helped establish a Digestive Disease Center at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, with a vision to facilitate the integration of GI medicine, surgery and radiology into an integrated unit. During his career, he has published more than 400 articles in peer-reviewed medical journals, edits the primary textbook on EUS and has contributed numerous chapters to gastroenterology and endoscopy textbooks. He has lectured and performed live endoscopy demonstrations around the world and trained a generation of endosonographers over the past 30 years.Dr. Hawes is a member of several national and international societies, a fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology and the Japanese Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society, and has previously served as president for the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), from 2005 to 2006. Recognized by ASGE with the Master Endoscopist Award, Dr. Hawes has received many awards and honors, including the Rudolf V.
