Overview
I treat children because they are a lot of fun and are generally happy. That tends to make my workplace happy too. Even when they are recovering from an illness or an injury, they are very resilient and often improve faster than adults do, so that's exciting to be part of. Also, as a pediatric emergency medicine physician, it’s extremely challenging and rewarding to figure out what's wrong with sick kids, and to be able to help them. It’s especially fulfilling, considering the wide variety of illnesses they come in with and all the different stages of those illnesses that they go through. I see a lot of critically ill children in the emergency department. I’m passionate about helping them, even if it’s only to make a small difference at first, with a full recovery being the ultimate goal. In addition, I enjoy teaching patients and their families about their illnesses or injuries. I also love working in a teaching hospital, which gives me the opportunity to help pass on my knowledge to other health professionals in the emergency department as well — from residents and fellows to physician assistants, imaging specialists and nurses. Each interaction provides a chance to make a lasting impression about a specific disease or injury and how to treat it.
