
Overview
Ramasubramanian (“Ram”) Kalpatthi, MD, is Clinical Research Director of Pediatric Sickle Cell Research and Director of PHO Medical Student and Resident Education at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. He is also a Visiting Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He is board certified in pediatric hematology-oncology. He earned his medical degree from Thanjavur Medical College in Thanjavur, India. He completed a Residency at All India Institute of Medical Sciences and Lincoln Medical Center followed by a fellowship at Nationwide Children's Hospital. Dr. Kalpatthi is nationally recognized for his excellence in the clinical care, clinical research, program development and leadership in the field of pediatric hematology oncology with special emphasis on sickle cell disease (SCD) and immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). His other clinical interests include therapeutic apheresis, immune hematological disorders, neonatal hematology, benign hematological disorders, and childhood leukemia. Also, he is a favorite among medical students, residents, and fellows due to his passion for teaching, guiding, and mentoring future generation of physicians. He has mentored medical students, residents, and fellows in completing clinical research projects that have been published and/or presented at national conferences such as the American Society of Hematology (ASH), the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology (ASPHO) and Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) meeting. Several of his mentees received outstanding abstract achievement awards for their work and most of his mentees have published their research in leading medical journals. He then completed a pediatric residency in New York, pediatric hematology and oncology fellowship at St. Jude Children’s Hospital, and then a pediatric hemostasis fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Dr. Xavier completed a master’s degree in clinical research at the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. He has published peer-reviewed articles and book chapters in the field of pediatric hemostasis and is currently awarded with a research grant to study inflammation in Hemophilia. Dr. Xavier also sits in the Newborn Screening and Follow-up Technical Advisory Board for the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Dr. Xavier also practices at the Hemophilia Center of Western Pennsylvania, a state and federally-funded 501(c)3 charitable organization that provides comprehensive medical care to the residents of Western Pennsylvania with hemophilia and other bleeding and clotting disorders. The functions of the center include diagnosis and evaluation of individuals with bleeding disorders; treatment of bleeding episodes and complications; education of the patient and family, the community, and other medical providers; communication and advocacy; supervision of home care; and research and data collection.
