At the beginning of his career, the mortality rate from the Whipple procedure was nearly 30 percent. He has worked to lower that to 1 percent to 2 percent at Johns Hopkins. He has operated on more patients with pancreatic cancer and done more Whipple resections than any other surgeon in the world. He served as chief of surgery for The Johns Hopkins Hospital for nineteen years. Dr. Cameron obtained his undergraduate degree from Harvard University in 1958, and his medical degree from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1962.
