Overview
Dr. Victoria Handa is the director of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. She is also a professor in the Johns Hopkins Medicine Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics and director of the Women’s Center for Pelvic Health and Reconstructive Surgery. She holds a joint appointment in the Department of Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Her areas of clinical expertise include pelvic floor disorders and female incontinence. Dr. Handa offers surgical and nonsurgical treatments for pelvic organ prolapse, incontinence and related conditions. Dr. Handa earned her undergraduate degree in civil engineering from Princeton University. She earned her M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of California, San Francisco. She completed a fellowship in urogynecology at the University of California, Irvine, and later earned a Master of Health Science in epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Handa joined the Johns Hopkins faculty in 2001. Prior to joining Johns Hopkins, Dr. Handa was chief of the Division of Gynecology and director of urogynecology at the University of California, Davis. Dedicated to scientific research, Dr. Handa has published numerous peer-reviewed research articles and several book chapters on pelvic floor disorders and urogynecology. Her research is supported by several National Institutes of Health grants and has led to many scientific findings and a 2011 award from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Dr. Handa is a member of several scientific societies, including the American Urogynecologic Society and the International Urogynecology Association. She currently serves on the editorial board of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery. She is a peer reviewer for numerous medical journals, including the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Neurourology and Urodynamics, and the Journal of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. Amanda Nickles Fader is a professor in the Johns Hopkins Hospital Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics and the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center. She is the former fellowship director and division director of the Johns Hopkins Kelly Gynecologic Oncology Service and currently is Vice Chair of Gynecologic Surgical Operations and the Director of the Center for Rare Gynecologic Cancers. Additionally, she serves as the 2024-2025 President of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology. Dr. Fader received her undergraduate degree with highest distinction in music (violin performance) and pre-medicine from the University of Virginia. She earned her medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia, and completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Magee-Women’s Hospital of UPMC in Pittsburgh. Dr. Fader then underwent gynecologic oncology fellowship training at the Cleveland Clinic. She has co-authored more than 230 publications in peer-reviewed medical journals and is recognized as an expert in rare gynecologic tumors, clinical trials and quality and safety in surgery. She has a special interest in uterine serous carcinoma and low-grade serous carcinoma of the ovary and currently serves as the PI or co-PI of three international NRG Oncology clinical trials. Dr. Fader serves as a national board examiner in gynecologic oncology for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Associate Editor of the Gynecologic Oncology journal is a member of the Rare Tumor and Uterine Corpus Committees of the NRG/Gynecologic Oncology Group. She is also co-founder of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology BRIDGES Program, a two-year longitudinal clinical trials and career development program for early-career oncologists. She has been the recipient of several research grants and awards for her research, including the Society of Gynecologic Oncology Innovations Award, the Best AAGL Paper in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Oncology Surgery, a Department of Defense Ovarian Cancer Clinical Trials Academy Leadership Award, and National Cancer Institute Cervical SPORE grant. Dr. Fader is consistently recognized for clinical excellence on lists such as Baltimore magazine’s Top Docs and Castle Connolly’s Top Doctors, and is a recipient of the Top 10 Docs, Compassionate Doctors and Patient Choice Awards from Vitals.com. She has particular expertise with the surgical and medical management of uterine (endometrial), ovarian, cervical and vulvar cancers, as well as the treatment of women who are at high risk for developing a gynecologic malignancy. Dr. Cornelia Trimble is a professor in the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics. She has joint appointments in the Departments of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Oncology, and Pathology. Dr. Trimble completed her residency in anatomic pathology at Cornell University Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in gynecologic pathology and a residency in gynecology and obstetrics at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Her clinical interest and expertise is in developing new ways to intercept cancers — treating pre-invasive, cancer precursor lesions — caused by HPV. Her work has focused on two nonsurgical strategies: (1) immunotherapy via therapeutic HPV vaccination, and (2) repurposing artesunate, a plant-derived compound used to treat malaria, as a topical treatment administered by the patient herself to treat high-grade, intraepithelial HPV lesions. Her work has shown proof-of-principle, that it is indeed possible to eliminate HPV pre-cancers without surgery, and has been recognized internationally. Dr. Trimble has dedicated herself to delivering cutting-edge care to girls and women who have a very common problem, caused by a very common virus, HPV.
