Dr. Yona Nicolau is a board-certified UCI Health pediatrician who specializes in neonatal and perinatal medicine. Her clinical interests include neonatal respiratory physiology, chronic lung disease in infancy and caring for extremely low weight infants.Nicolau earned her medical degree from Carol Davila University in Romania. She completed a residency in pediatrics at the UC San Francisco School of Medicine program in Fresno, Calif., where she served as chief resident. She then received fellowship training in neonatal and perinatal medicine at the UCI School of Medicine and UCI Medical Center, where she served as chief fellow. Before joining UCI Health, she served as medical director for respiratory care at Loma Linda University Children's Hospital in Loma Linda, Calif.She is a principal investigator on numerous clinical trials and hopes to study ways to improved care for infants with extremely low birth weights. She has made many presentations at national conferences and is the author or co-author of a number of papers published in major journals. And as chair of the Department of Pediatrics' clinical competency committee for the neonatal and perinatal fellowship program, she also is developing a clinical quality improvement program.
