I am from Rockford, IL and I'm a general surgeon. I always thought I would be a cancer doctor but never a surgeon. It turns out I enjoyed operating. I enjoy the immediate gratification of surgical treatment whether it's removing an appendix, or fixing an incarcerated hernia. I love Durham, NC as does my wife and two children. I am a gastrointestinal and general surgeon with subspecialty experience in endocrine and bariatric surgery, focusing on emergency general surgery and conditions of the GI tract (like bowel obstructions, cholecystitis, diverticulitis, and appendicitis). I initially trained and practiced at USF Health in Tampa, for nearly 15 years. In 2012, I was recruited to the NC Triad, where I developed the Acute Care Surgery Program. In 2018, I joined the faculty at Duke University as the lead physician to build the Acute Care Surgery Program at Duke Raleigh Hospital. It is an honor and privilege to care for patients while training the next generation of surgeons and surgical thought leaders at Duke. When not in the hospital or doing research, I can be found with my family and dog or horse--or maybe you'll catch me enjoying a college football game with my son. The most satisfying part of my job is when patients are proud of their success and recognize their ability to accomplish their goals. I was raised in upstate NY, attended Boston College, and spent three years working in Colorado prior to starting medical school in Arizona. I received advanced specialty training in weight loss surgery and endoscopic treatment of reflux disease at Duke in 2014. I enjoy spending my spare time outdoors.
