I was drawn to medicine and specifically to the field of interventional radiology because of my desire to help patients using the most up to date technologies and minimally invasive techniques. Our ability to treat diverse illnesses such as liver and kidney cancer, vascular disease and infections though a tiny incision just a few millimeters in size allows me to achieve my ultimate goal: helping patients recover from their illnesses faster with less discomfort and less inconvenience. In addition to treating patients, I also participate in research to help advance the field of interventional radiology and ensure that we have the knowledge to provide the highest quality care for our patients. As an interventional radiologist, my expertise is in minimally invasive procedures performed using radiologic guidance using the most current technology and devices in a variety of organ systems. Areas of particular clinical interest include minimally invasive cancer treatment of tumors in the liver, kidney, and bone (including osteoid osteoma) using interventional techniques such as embolization, radioembolization, and drug-eluting beads, as well as thermal ablative techniques including radiofrequency ablation, microwave ablation, and cryoablation. Additional areas of interest include endovascular interventions of venous pathology (including central venous occlusions and hemodialysis access), percutaneous enteral nutrition, particularly in patients with complex anatomy and needs -- including percutaneous jejunal feeding tubes), and vascular imaging using MR angiography and CT angiography. Interventional radiology allows me to perform minimally invasive procedures to treat a wide array of problems. Through tiny incisions on the skin that most frequently don’t require stitches, I insert a catheter, direct it to the problem area using imaging guidance (x-rays and/or ultrasound), and treat the problem. My areas of clinical focus include women (fibroids, adenomyosis, post-partum hemorrhage, placenta increta or percreta, occluded Fallopian tubes, chronic pelvic pain from pelvic congestion), children (venous malformations, arteriovenous malformations, combined malformations, difficult venous access), and lymphatics (lymphatic malformations, lymphoceles, chylothorax, chylous ascites, plastic bronchitis, protein losing enteropathy). To me, the most fulfilling part of interventional radiology is to provide patients effective minimally invasive alternatives to surgical procedures with fewer risks and shorter recovery times.
