Dr. Stuart J. Knechtle

As an abdominal transplant surgeon, I perform transplants of the liver, kidney, pancreas and small bowels. I also do general abdominal procedures like hernia repairs. The most rewarding part of my job is the satisfaction and happiness I get when I see my patients’ faces after their transplant. I don’t want transplant patients to feel like we are putting them in a bubble. We expect them to live normal, happy lives, and enjoy the new organ once it’s given to them. Each patient comes to us with a unique challenge, but the best part of my job is the way the patient comes through obstacles and recovers. I decided to focus my training in abdominal transplant surgery after practicing general surgery in India and desiring a new challenge. I came to the U.S. to complete my surgical fellowship at Duke. I treat children with disorders of the kidneys, bladder, ureters, and genitalia. My particular specialties are treating children with urologic cancer, disorders of sex differentiation, complex birth defects, hypospadias, kidney stones, bladder/bowel dysfunction and incontinence, and spina bifida. My top priority is to find the most effective and least invasive treatment option for every child and every family I see. I have advanced fellowship training in robotic and minimally-invasive surgery, so I am able to offer this option to children who might benefit from a less-invasive surgery. I am a member of the American Urological Association, the Society for Pediatric Urology, the Society for Fetal Urology, and the Children's Oncology Group. I look forward to going to work at Duke Health every day. I get the opportunity to help others while doing work that is stimulating and challenging each and every day. My practice covers all surgical and medical aspects of pediatric urology. Common surgical problems are correction of hypospadias, undescended testes, vesicoureteral reflux, and urinary obstruction. Medical issues include incontinence and urinary tract infections. Urological care of spina bifida is another large area of my focus. As a surgeon, I am able to use my hands and harness the creative parts of my mind toward that goal. Working with children is a joy and keeps me young and on my toes. Having three children of my own keeps me grounded and makes me individualize the plan for each patient as I would want for my own child. I feel fortunate to be at Duke where I am surrounded by brilliant colleagues and curious students. This stimulation drives me to strive to be my best and to conduct research that will benefit my own patients and similar children worldwide.
