
Overview
Martin Wijkstrom, MD, is an abdominal transplant surgeon. He is an associate professor of surgery and is the director of Islet Cell Transplantation and the Abdominal Transplant Fellowship Program at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Wijkstrom received his medical degree from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden and spent three years at the University of Minnesota doing preclinical research in islet xenotransplantation. After completing a general surgery residency at Emory University, he did a fellowship in abdominal transplantation at Northwestern University. Dr. Wijkstrom’s clinical interests include surgical treatment of diabetes such as pancreas transplants in uremic and nonuremic patients, islet auto-islet transplants in patients with chronic pancreatitis, islet transplantation in preclinical nonhuman primate models, and clinical stem cell-derived islet transplantation in type 1 diabetic patients with hypoglycemia unawareness.
