Duke Children's Health Center Hematology/Oncology Clinic
I treat children with cancer and blood disorders, such as anemia and sickle cell disease. When families come in, there is understandably a huge amount of anxiety. I try to spend a lot of time with them and discuss what we know, what we need to find out, and how we plan to care for their children. My goal is to make it the least scary as possible for both the children and the parents/caregivers while providing the best care. Even in the setting of severe illness, interacting with children is uplifting and extremely rewarding. Children truly demonstrate the resilience of the human spirit. What I love most about my job is having relationships with children and seeing them grow; it is a wonderful experience. Dr. Rothman is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in Splenectomy. Her top areas of expertise are Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency, Anemia, Hemolytic Anemia, Congenital Hemolytic Anemia, and Splenectomy.
Duke Ambulatory Surgery Center
As a general pediatric surgeon, I take care of children with many different conditions of the chest or abdomen. These conditions can include birth defects, cancers, injuries caused by accidents and more. I also serve as chief of the division of pediatric surgery at Duke. When a child needs surgical care, it is one of the most challenging times in a family’s life. We are surrounded by a great team at Duke, which gives families the peace of mind that their child is in the best hands possible. I enjoy my role, because I not only get to work with families during times of challenge and happiness, but with staff members who are dedicated to keeping children healthy. I also relish my role in training young surgeons who are dedicated to helping children grow up as healthy as possible. Dr. Rice is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in Splenectomy. His top areas of expertise are Hereditary Spherocytosis, Atresia of Small Intestine, Omphalocele, Splenectomy, and Pancreaticoduodenectomy.
Duke Kidney/Pancreas Transplant Clinic - Clinic 2B/2C
I am a transplant surgeon specializing in kidney transplants. Kidney transplantation is unique in surgery because you’re providing a cure for a disease. It’s very rewarding to see the patients succeed after surgery; the donors also make my practice very special. We can’t do a transplant without them providing this wonderful gift. Duke has been performing kidney transplants for 50+ years – since the very beginnings of the field. In fact, the process of how we match tissues for transplants was started at Duke. We’ve done thousands of kidney transplants here, so it’s great to be a part of a program with such a rich history. I’m also the chairman of the Department of Surgery and the surgeon-in-chief for the Duke University Health System, where we perform all types of transplants. Dr. Kirk is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in Splenectomy.
