I am motivated to unlock the mysteries of human immunology and to understand how to treat the many aspects of health problems that occur in immune deficiencies. My clinical and basic science research goals include studying common variable immune deficiency (CVID). My career in medicine has been a journey. Committed to become a physician at the age of five, I desired to learn how to help people feel better. Over time, and a few degrees later, I discovered the best way to help people through my study of medicine is to not only care for them through thoughtful listening and problem solving, but also to study through an active research program in the lab those questions I cannot answer. I chose to select training that encompassed both traditional medical school curriculum as well as bench and clinic science. Her top areas of expertise are Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria (CSU), Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), Chronic Granulomatous Disease, and Ganglioglioma.

I first became interested in pursuing a career in medicine after being a camp counselor for children with autoimmune type I diabetes when I was in college. I wanted to learn more about and care for patients who had autoimmune diseases and immune dysregulation, which is what led to my dual training in both rheumatology and allergy immunology. My clinical practice, where I teach medical students, residents and rheumatology and allergy/immunology fellows, reflects this comprehensive immunologic approach. Diseases in which I have particular expertise include rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren's syndrome, autoimmune inflammatory eye disease and common variable immune deficiency (CVID). I have several family members who also have autoimmune diseases and I have learned that care can be long term and involve a team approach. As a result, patient-centered care has become a personal goal. Dr. Tarrant is highly rated in 1 condition, according to our data. Her top areas of expertise are Arthritis, Polyarteritis Nodosa, Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), and Paget's Disease of Bone.

Ever since I was a young child, I dreamed of being a doctor. As I progressed through my medical training, I was fascinated by the intricacies of the immune system and chose to specialize in allergy and immunology. I take care of children and adults with a wide spectrum of conditions. For the allergy side, I manage conditions such as seasonal allergies, food allergies, medication allergies, hives, asthma, and eczema. For the immunology side, I manage primary and secondary immunodeficiencies. I am committed to using my expertise to provide a correct diagnosis. I hope to partner with my patients by providing all the options and together we can decide on the next steps. Outside of work, I love spending time with my husband and daughter. I also enjoy cooking, baking, spending time outdoors, and traveling.

I love my job and I am grateful for the chance to care for children every day – particularly those with food allergies, eczema, asthma, and seasonal allergies, or hay fever. My patients benefit from what I learn from my research into asthma. In addition to being a doctor, I am the mother of two little boys. I enjoy talking with parents about their children, from both a doctor's and a mother's perspective. My husband and I love the outdoors, and are usually outside with our kids on the weekends. I feel very fortunate to be in the field of Allergy and Immunology, where I get to work with children with some of the rarest diseases of the immune system as well as kids with some of the most common chronic conditions of childhood, such as asthma and seasonal allergies. It is an exciting time to be an Allergist and Immunologist, with many new therapies becoming available. What I enjoy most about what I do is working with families to manage their child’s condition so that they can focus on just being kids. My husband is also a physician at Duke Health. We are excited to return to the Triangle area where we first met as undergraduates. We have three young children and most of my spare time is spent with my beautiful family. Her top areas of expertise are Vibratory Urticaria and Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria (CSU).

Since early childhood, I dreamed of becoming a pianist and making people happy by giving joy through music. However, as I volunteered at hospitals and rehabilitation facilities during high school years, a desire to provide a more practical help for sick people drew me to the field of medicine. Our immune system is fascinating in that you need to have the right balance to stay healthy, and it can affect virtually all organ systems in your body. An over-excited immune system can give you allergies or autoimmune disease, whereas if you don’t have enough immunity, it will leave you vulnerable to serious infections. It is rewarding to see a miserable child suffering from allergies, asthma or eczema become happy and smiley after a little bit of help from me. I am incredibly grateful when I am able to identify serious immune deficient states such as SCID (severe combined immunodeficiency), and have the opportunity to save the child’s life through early diagnosis and management. Outside of work, I spend most of my time with my family. My husband and I love to travel and we try to plan at least one family trip a year with our two little boys. Her top areas of expertise are Vibratory Urticaria and Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria (CSU).

When should I see an Immunologist or Allergist near Durham, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Immunologist or Allergist near Durham, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Immunologist or Allergists near Durham, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Immunologist or Allergists near Durham, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Immunologist or Allergist in Durham?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Immunologist or Allergist search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Immunologist or Allergist?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Immunologist or Allergist near Durham, NC?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Immunologist or Allergist?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Immunologist or Allergist may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Immunologist or Allergists near Durham, NC?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Immunologist or Allergist search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Immunologist or Allergist that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Immunologist or Allergist search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
