I am an orthopaedic physician and work in adult reconstructive orthopaedics, predominantly with hip- and knee-replacement surgeries. I also help manage revision surgeries and take care of people with infections or fractures around their implants. I am interested in the whole continuum of care for arthritis and not just the surgical treatment of it. Even though I specialize in surgery, not everyone needs that treatment, and as an orthopaedic doctor, my role is to help direct the whole process. The care around revision surgeries at other centers is tertiary and many times not at the same place, but here at Duke we treat patients every step of the way at the same practice and have access to the latest treatments. Dr. Jiranek is highly rated in 9 conditions, according to our data. His top areas of expertise are Osteoarthritis, Infectious Arthritis, Septic Arthritis, Knee Replacement, and Hip Replacement.

I am a surgical oncologist and researcher who specializes in treating patients with endocrine tumors. Specifically, I see patients who have thyroid cancers, parathyroid disease, adrenal tumors and melanoma. I enjoy taking care of patients with cancers because the amount of trust and faith that they place in their doctors is special. Treating cancers allows you to develop a powerful relationship with a patient and their loved ones in a very short period of time, which is also unique. My favorite part of being a surgeon is seeing a patient with a problem and successfully seeing them through the surgical process. I believe in guiding each patient to their long-term goal based on their specific needs. When I am at home, I enjoy spending time with my family and being active outdoors by running, hiking, or gardening. Dr. Scheri is highly rated in 18 conditions, according to our data. His top areas of expertise are Thyroid Cancer, Hyperparathyroidism, Parathyroid Cancer, Thyroidectomy, and Parathyroidectomy.

I treat fractures, sports injuries, and acute traumas, as well as more common ailments like tendonitis, carpal tunnel, arthritis and trigger fingers. Duke offers cutting edge technology and research, but we also excel in patient care. That combination makes Duke a special place for our patients. Outside of work, I like to spend time with my wife and two children. We enjoy following the Boston Red Sox and local baseball teams. For exercise I like to run, swim and play tennis. I love being a vascular surgeon because it provides the opportunity to treat disease in all aspects of the body. I specialize in arterial disease, whether that means preventing an abdominal aortic aneurysm from rupturing or performing a bypass to end debilitating leg pain. Vascular surgery is a unique combination of traditional technical challenges and modern technology, which allows for minimally invasive procedures. Most important, vascular surgery allows me to create long-term relationships with my patients. I like to sit down and speak with patients and their families in order to create a family atmosphere where patients feel they can talk to me about anything. At the end of the day, we are all on the same team. Dr. Long is highly rated in 8 conditions, according to our data. Duke Health offers me a special opportunity to treat diverse pathologies in patients from all over the world. My choice to pursue a career as a hip and knee surgeon centered around the ability to achieve exceptional patient outcomes. There is no greater reward than fostering a close relationship with a patient, working with them to customize a treatment specific to their needs, and helping them return to the highest possible function with the least pain, whether just going for walks or returning to sports. I believe in a systematic approach to hip and knee pain, as well as offering a spectrum of nonoperative and surgical treatment options tailored to each patient. Whether you are younger and have never had surgery or have continued pain after a prior surgery and want a second opinion, I am looking forward to hearing your story and working together to improve your function. I am a colorectal surgeon and researcher who has been at Duke for about 25 years. I see patients who have issues with the small bowel, colon, rectum and anus. These issues include benign tumors, cancers, hemorrhoids and fistulas. The best part of my job is operating. The operating room is a special place, where we have been able to put a number of processes in place so things run smoothly and we can give patients the best chance at a good outcome. The fact that you can take a condition, operate and potentially cure a patient is fascinating to me. As a faculty member, I also enjoy when I have the chance to teach residents during the operation. When I am not at work, I enjoy fishing, hiking and playing tennis with my children. Dr. Mantyh is highly rated in 11 conditions, according to our data. His top areas of expertise are Colorectal Cancer, Genital Warts, Familial Colorectal Cancer, Colostomy, and Ileostomy.

I’m a fellowship-trained surgical oncologist who specializes in the surgical management of patients with gastrointestinal malignancies—including soft tissue sarcomas and pancreas, colorectal and gastric cancers. Many of my patients have advanced malignancies and I am always amazed at their resilience. Their determination to fight inspires me to aggressively pursue every surgical option and to study novel techniques to improve surgical outcomes. One of the most important reasons for patients to be treated at Duke is the emphasis on a team-oriented approach to every patient. Nearly every surgical cancer patient is discussed in a multidisciplinary tumor conference in order to assure state of the art care. When I am not in the hospital, my wife and I can be found chasing our two young children or running with our dog. Dr. Blazer-Iii is highly rated in 35 conditions, according to our data. In 2018, I joined the faculty at Duke University and now serve as the chief of surgical oncology for Duke Health. I enjoy getting to know my patients and delivering the highest quality of cancer care. I find the endocrine organs and hormones fascinating and am forever learning new things from my patients. I cherish the overwhelming success in helping control and normalize hormone processes surgically. The hugs, handshakes or tears of joy from my patients at their follow up are the reason I became an endocrine surgeon. In addition to the treatment of aberrant endocrine gland function, I also evaluate any tumor process of the thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal and endocrine pancreas. The unfortunate reality is that many of these tumors are cancerous. My own family has dealt with thyroid cancer. The experiences of my wife and mother-in-law in dealing with the diagnosis of cancer, the surgery, the treatment, the challenge of hormone regulation, the follow up and the reality of cancer recurrence is something that is a part of me and reflected in how I relate to my cancer patients. Dr. Stang is highly rated in 17 conditions, according to our data. His top areas of expertise are Hyperparathyroidism, Thyroid Nodule, Thyroid Cancer, Thyroidectomy, and Parathyroidectomy.

As a surgeon that specializes in the vascular system, which is the body's network of blood vessels, I appreciate that there are many different ways to significantly help people. I truly believe making a connection with a person is one of the most important aspects in patient care. I don’t tell my patients what decision to make about their health. It's my job to understand the priorities in their life and then give them information and guidance to make their own decision. In doing so, a stroke can be prevented by repairing arteries to the brain. Fixing an aneurysm, which is caused by a weakness in the wall of an artery, can save someone from hemorrhaging to death, and treating the arteries to the legs can prevent an amputation or help reduce some causes of severe leg pain. Dr. Shortell is highly rated in 16 conditions, according to our data. Her top areas of expertise are Varicose Veins, Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA), Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm, Carotid Artery Surgery, and Thrombectomy.

I came to Duke from Nebraska, where I was a medical director for two weight loss surgery programs. I decided to become a weight loss surgeon because it gives me the chance to establish a long-term relationship with my patients. For many patients, weight loss surgery often feels like a fresh start, since they are able to get rid of some of the health problems they may have acquired due to their weight and do certain activities they couldn’t do before. I get a thrill out of being able help patients start this “new life.” My approach to care involves listening to what the patient wants out of the surgery, educating them about various treatment options and performing a full evaluation. Then, I work with the patient to come up with a treatment plan that meets their physical and mental health needs. Dr. Sudan is highly rated in 10 conditions, according to our data. His top areas of expertise are Hernia, Obesity, End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), Gastric Bypass, and Gastrectomy.

I am an orthopaedic surgeon who is the chief of hand surgery at Duke. Although we are referred to as “hand surgeons,” I treat many people with wrist and elbow conditions. Because the hand is so complex, patients who see me can have complaints that range from numbness and weakness to issues with range of motion. My grandfather, my grandmother, my mother and my father were all health care workers. I have wanted to be a surgeon since I watched M*A*S*H on the television as a child. I obtain great satisfaction from treating someone who has a very severe hand or arm injury, reconstructing the part and restoring its basic function. Duke has been the strongest hand surgery program in the country for the past 50 to 75 years. As chair of the program, I want patients to know that the best and the brightest providers are seeing them when they come to Duke. Dr. Ruch is highly rated in 9 conditions, according to our data. I am an adult reconstruction surgeon here at Duke. I completed graduate school and residency training at Wake Forest University, followed by a fellowship in adult reconstruction at Duke. My choice to pursue a career in adult reconstruction was based on my passion for patient outcomes. I was truly inspired by patients’ satisfaction and the drastic improvement on their quality of life after total joint replacement. I enjoy the systematic approach to problem solving and the complexity of cases in adult reconstruction, especially in the setting of revision arthroplasty. My clinical and research interests are centered around periprosthetic joint infections, a disastrous complication which continues to pose a challenge to the orthopaedic community. Despite the progress made, our goal to prevent infection following arthroplasty surgery remains unaccomplished. It is not an exaggeration to claim that fear of infection lives in the heart of every arthroplasty surgeon who steps into the operating room. My mission is to provide a personalized assessment and treat each patient individually, based upon their condition and needs. Dr. Seyler is highly rated in 8 conditions, according to our data. His top areas of expertise are Septic Arthritis, Infectious Arthritis, Osteoarthritis, Knee Replacement, and Hip Replacement.

The impact I have on my patients is what I enjoy most about being a weight loss surgeon. It is amazing that we can do an operation that not only helps a patient lose weight, but also fixes their diabetes, high blood pressure, and cholesterol, along with giving them a better quality of life. There are a lot of options these days for people who are considering weight loss surgery. It’s important for patients to take into account each institution and what resources they have available. Duke is fully equipped to take care of complex cases in a safe manner. We have a multi-institutional team that’s been around the Triangle the longest and has the most experience. Almost every patient comes back after surgery and we see some of their previous medical conditions go away. That’s a good definition of success. Dr. Portenier is highly rated in 8 conditions, according to our data. His top areas of expertise are Obesity, Hernia, Short Bowel Syndrome, Gastric Bypass, and Sleeve Gastrectomy.

I grew up in Durham and I am extremely proud to work here at Duke. All of my family members still call the Bull City home. Most of my education was completed in Durham, except for four years I spent down the road in Chapel Hill. I played football there and developed an interest in orthopaedic surgery that led me home. I specialize in hip and knee replacement and am very fortunate to do so. We have the ability to help so many people with these operations. It is extremely rewarding to help someone get back to doing the things they want to do with their life. Duke is the kind of place where you are challenged by the most difficult cases weekly and I appreciate that fact. We have great doctors in every field and we work as a team on every aspect of a patient's care once they enter the hospital. Dr. Bolognesi is highly rated in 8 conditions, according to our data. His top areas of expertise are Osteoarthritis, Acute Pain, Arthritis, Knee Replacement, and Hip Replacement.

I am a colorectal surgeon, which means that I am a surgeon of the abdomen. I treat patients with diseases related to the gastrointestinal tract, specifically with diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease, colitis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and also GI cancers, such as colon cancer, rectal cancer, and anal cancer. I try to engage with the patient as much as I can. I use as many visual things as possible, pictures or diagrams, to help explain conditions or treatments a little easier. The benefit of coming to Duke is that we have multiple specialties, so if a diagnosis is unclear to me, I have a team of colleagues who help me and patients can be comfortable knowing a team of specialists can help find a solution. I am a vascular surgeon with Duke Health. I treat all vascular problems, but I primarily focus on problems involving arteries, such aneurysms or blockages in arteries that supply the brain, intestines, or legs. Vascular disease can be chronic and life altering. In my opinion, patients with vascular disease are extremely resilient. It was the resilience of patients with vascular disease that drew me to this specialty. I found the resilience and perseverance of vascular patients inspiring. I enjoy getting to know patients and their families and being a part of their story. I am originally for Washington D.C. I enjoy sports, grilling and spending time with my wife and two children. I chose a career in medicine to combine my passion for science with my calling to care for people. There is little in life that brings me more joy than making people feel and function better. I consider myself to be incredibly lucky to be a part of Duke Health, an institution that believes in being on the cutting edge of medical science while always making sure that individual patients get the absolute best care. Duke Health gives me the support necessary to teach trainees and pursue my research interests while staying true to my personal belief that the patient always comes first. When should I see a General Surgeon near Research Triangle Park, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

      • Your primary care provider recommends it.
      • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
      • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
      • You need specialized testing or procedures.
      • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a General Surgeon near Research Triangle Park, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank General Surgeons near Research Triangle Park, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by General Surgeons near Research Triangle Park, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a General Surgeon in Research Triangle Park?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the General Surgeon search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different General Surgeon?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a General Surgeon near Research Triangle Park, NC?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

      • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
      • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
      • Family history of disease
      • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
      • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
      • List of questions and concerns
      • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my General Surgeon?

      Here are some sample questions:

      • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
      • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
      • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
      • Are there other specialists I need to see?
      • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my General Surgeon may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female General Surgeons near Research Triangle Park, NC?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the General Surgeon search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

What are the most common health conditions that a General Surgeon near Research Triangle Park, NC might treat?

Can I filter my search to find a General Surgeon that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the General Surgeon search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
